DES MOINES, Iowa. – The #5-ranked Campbellsville University men's wrestling team battled through one of the toughest regular-season tournaments in the NAIA, securing six placers across the Open and Freshman/Sophomore divisions at the Grand View Open. The day was headlined by fourth-place finishes from #5
Nik Yancey and #21
Wyatt Hinton.
- The #5 Tigers saw six wrestlers place in the top six of their divisions at the highly competitive Grand View Open.
- #5 Nik Yancey (149 lbs.) led the Open division placers with a 4th-place finish, with his only contested loss coming against an NCAA Division I opponent.
- #21 Wyatt Hinton (133 lbs.) outperformed his ranking to take 4th place, battling back with five straight consolation wins after dropping his opening match.
- Unranked Peter Kolomiyets (197 lbs.) made an impressive run to the semifinals, including a fall over #18 Aidan Abad, to secure a 6th-place finish.
- The Tigers' underclassmen impressed, with Ashton Boswell (5th, 197 lbs.), Luke Schlosser (5th, 165 lbs.), and TJ Meyer (6th, 141 lbs.) all placing in the Fresh/Soph division.
- In a loaded 174-pound Open bracket, #2 Shad Slone was eliminated after dropping decisions to two tough conference rivals.
- The Tigers will next compete at Life University's Lucha Open on Saturday, November 22nd.
Open Division Highlights
#5
Nik Yancey (149 lbs.) led the charge, securing a 4th-place finish. Yancey opened with a 16-6 major decision and a 19-4 technical fall. He punched his ticket to the semifinals by winning a 4-1 sudden victory bout against Elvis Solis of #4 Life University. Yancey's only contested loss came against NCAA Division I opponent Ethan Basile of Northern Iowa. He medically forfeited the 3rd place match to #1 Elijah Larsen (#1 Grand View).
At 133 lbs., #21
Wyatt Hinton provided one of the day's best stories, battling all the way back to a 4th-place finish after dropping his first match. After a 4-1 sudden victory loss, Hinton rattled off five consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, including a fall (5:28) and wins over teammate
Troy Kennedy (5-1) and Adrian Morales of Life (7-3).
Unranked
Peter Kolomiyets (197 lbs.) had a breakout performance, placing 6th. Kolomiyets made a run to the semifinals, highlighted by a second-round pin (3:16) over #18 Aidan Abad of #16 Marian University. He finished the day 2-1 before bowing out with medical forfeits.
In the 174 lbs. bracket, #2 Shadrick Slone faced a gauntlet of conference foes. After a first-round bye, Slone was upset 6-1 by Konlin Weaver of Life. He responded with a 15-0 technical fall, a fall (2:27), and an 18-2 technical fall over #20 Jeivan Ross (Marian). Slone's day ended in the consolation rounds with a 4-2 decision loss to #12 Weston Melvin of #12 Cumberlands.
Also in the Open division, #22
Bryant Beane (141 lbs.) went 4-2 with a major decision, and
Shane Watson (141 lbs.) finished 3-2 with a fall and a 12-1 major decision over #20 Arojae Hart (#13 Central Methodist).
Freshman/Sophomore Division Highlights
The Tigers' underclassmen secured three placers in the Freshman/Sophomore brackets.
Ashton Boswell (197 lbs.) was dominant en route to a 5th-place finish. He pinned his first two opponents (1:32 and 2:59) and won his quarterfinal by 19-4 technical fall before having to medically forfeit out of the semifinals.
At 165 lbs.,
Luke Schlosser also claimed 5th place. He opened with an 18-1 technical fall and a fall (5:21) on his way to a 4-1 record before the 5th place match.
TJ Meyer (141 lbs.) battled back from a loss to take 6th place, picking up two falls and a 19-4 technical fall in the consolation bracket.
Several other freshmen had strong showings:
- Levi Collins (165 lbs.) started his day with three consecutive falls.
- Cameron Meier (125 lbs.) had a busy day, losing his first match before winning six straight in the consolation bracket before his elimination.
- Cal Beadling (149 lbs.) went 5-1 on the day, opening with a 19-1 tech fall and adding two more tech falls and a fall in the consolations.
