#6 Tigers secure three podium finishes at Lucha Open

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – The #6-ranked Campbellsville University men's wrestling team competed at the Lucha Open this past weekend, collecting three podium finishes across the Gold Division. The Tigers were led by a 3rd-place finish from #14 Nick Moore (141 lbs.), while Samuel Bertin (285 lbs.) placed 5th and TJ Meyer (141 lbs.) took 6th.

Gold Division Highlights

#14 Nick Moore (141 lbs.) paced the Tigers with a 3rd-place finish. Moore opened his tournament with a 2:03 fall over Anthony Santos (Keiser University) and followed up with a 9-5 decision win over Ethan Vugman (University of Florida). In the quarterfinals, Moore secured a 12-2 major decision over Martrece Smith (Life NCWA). After a semifinal loss to Ruben R. Calderon (Paradigm Wrestling), Moore claimed 3rd place via medical forfeit over #16 Drew Jones (Southeastern).
Samuel Bertin (285 lbs.) captured 5th place in a loaded weight class. Bertin started strong with a 13-2 major decision over Justin Tripp (Southern Oregon) and a 7-1 decision over Miguel Perez (Lindsey Wilson). After falling in the quarterfinals, Bertin rebounded in the consolation bracket with back-to-back falls—pinning Jovon Howe (Cumberlands) in 0:41 and Sebastian Echeverria (Southern Oregon) in 1:22. He claimed 5th place by no contest over Luke Cox (Georgetown).
TJ Meyer (141 lbs.) earned 6th place, rallying through the consolation bracket after an opening-round loss to Matthew Velasco (Montevallo). Meyer picked up technical falls over Joshua Henry (LUCHA RTC) and Manuel Gonzales (Montevallo), a 3:43 fall over Jeffery Richards (Mt. Olive), and a 10-8 win over teammate Shane Watson before falling in the 5th-place match.
Shane Watson (141 lbs.) had a competitive day, finishing 8th. He opened with a fall over Joseph Hutchins (Southeastern) and secured multiple consolation victories, including a 13-10 sudden-victory win over Ethan Vugman (University of Florida).
Other Gold Division contributors included Caleb Thomas (125 lbs.), Gavin Andreoni (149 lbs.), Malachi Kapenga (141 lbs.), Lody Cheatham (165 lbs.), Brady Jarvis (165 lbs.), and Cal Beadling (149 lbs.), all scoring team points with technical falls, major decisions, or falls throughout the day.

Silver Division Highlights

The Tigers' Silver Division competitors also posted solid performances. Zykhi Sistrunk (125 lbs.) won two falls in the consolation rounds (2:24 and 4:37) before being eliminated. Connor Metcalf (149 lbs.) won two matches in the consolation bracket, while Randall Sliger (157 lbs.) picked up a decision and a fall. James Harris (174 lbs.) earned a bye in the consolation round, and Ethan Heady (285 lbs.) scored a key 5-4 decision over Braeden Buxton (University of Rio Grande).
