Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Continuing their play in the Cumberland Classic, Campbellsville University secured an exciting four-set victory over #3 Lawrence Tech on the second day of competition.
The match started as a tightly contested battle, with both teams remaining neck and neck until a tie at 11. A crucial stuff block by Mason McKinney gave the Tigers momentum, sparking a four-point run that forced a Blue Devils timeout at 15-11. Andrew Ovalle delivered an incredible one-handed dig, setting up a massive swing from Ayoube Hamadache to keep the Tigers in control. Though Lawrence Tech fought back to tie the set at 19, Campbellsville finished strong, closing out the first set with a 25-20 win.
Campbellsville struck first in the second set, but Lawrence Tech quickly responded with a dominant five-point run, prompting a Tigers timeout. A stuff block from John Marcos Gonzalez helped cut the deficit, but the Blue Devils ramped up their pressure with aggressive serving and offensive execution. Despite Campbellsville's attempts to mount a comeback, Lawrence Tech proved too strong in the second set, securing a 25-12 win to even the match.
Looking to regain control, the Tigers came out swinging in the third set, securing the first point before Lawrence Tech responded with an ace. The Blue Devils continued to test Campbellsville's defense with powerful attacks, but Gonzalez helped keep the Tigers close with a key kill. However, hitting errors plagued Campbellsville, as they committed 11 in the set. A timeout at 10-13 helped reset the Tigers, and back-to-back defensive plays, including a crucial block from McKinney and Gonzalez, closed the gap. David Barcan energized the team with a timely ace, setting up a back-and-forth battle down the stretch. Tied at 19, the Blue Devils called a timeout, but Campbellsville had the final say as Denzel Madrigal hammered down the winning kill to claim the set 25-22.
With momentum on their side, the Tigers looked to close out the match in the fourth set. Both teams traded points early, with Hamadache delivering a key kill to keep Campbellsville within striking distance. The set remained tight, with ties at 12 and 18, before the Blue Devils called their final timeout at 22-19 in a last-ditch effort to extend the match. However, Campbellsville remained composed, sealing the victory with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
The Tigers will return to action tomorrow, wrapping up the Cumberland Classic with match-ups against Judson University at 1 p.m. ET and Life University at 5 p.m. ET.
