Gonzalez's career-high 22 kills leads Tigers to 3-1 win against Hawks

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Campbellsville Tigers wrapped up their time in the Sunshine State with a decisive four-set victory over the Viterbo University Hawks. The Tigers capitalized on early errors, controlled the pace, and held off a late push to secure the win.

Campbellsville set the tone in the opening, taking advantage of Viterbo's offensive struggles. The Tigers jumped to a six-point lead and never allowed the Hawks to find momentum.  Viterbo struggled to get their offense going, committing eight errors within the first 15 points. The Hawks called a timeout at 17-10, hoping to reset, but Campbellsville remained in control, closing out the first set 25-18.

Set two started with a service error from Campbellsville, giving the Hawks the first point, but the Tigers quickly responded. Guthrie Hite ignited the energy with a powerful 10-foot-line swing with the bench on its feet. Andrew Ovalle followed with two aces, and another Hite attack extended the lead. Viterbo fought back, closing the gap to two, but a service error gave Campbellsville the breathing room they needed. A pair of Tiger miscues tightened the score to 23-22, forcing a timeout. After another timeout at 23-24, Campbellsville showed resilience. Denzel Madrigal delivered a clutch kill to tie the set at 24, and John Marcos Gonzalez stepped up with two more kills to push the Tigers forward. Hite sealed the set with an ace, capping off a thrilling 30-28 win.

The third set began with back-to-back service errors from both teams. Campbellsville built an early three-point lead, but the Hawks responded, flipping the momentum and pushing the Tigers into a three-point deficit. Viterbo's offense found its rhythm, hitting .350 in the set, forcing Campbellsville into a timeout at 17-13. The Tigers battled back within three but followed with a costly hitting error, leading to another timeout. Viterbo maintained control and took the set 25-20.

Determined to close the match, Campbellsville appeared aggressive in the fourth. Gonzalez and Madrigal sparked an early lead, and Pedro Zavatini fired up the team with two aces and a kill. Mason McKinney added to the momentum with his own kill, extending the lead to four. Viterbo took a timeout at 15-10 as Campbellsville looked to put the match away. The Tigers never let up, securing the set and the match victory 25-19.

Campbellsville heads north, preparing for its next matchup against Reinhardt University on Monday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
