CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The #4 Campbellsville University men's volleyball team hosted the Cumberland University Phoenix at Gosser Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Despite an impressive season-high 23 digs from sophomore libero
Andrew Ovalle, the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season in a hard-fought four-set thriller against the Phoenix (24-26, 18-25, 25-19, 18-25).
- Libero Andrew Ovalle showcased his defensive prowess, anchoring the backcourt with a match- and season-high 23 digs.
- Freshman outside hitter Savvas Christou was a focal point offensively for the Tigers, putting down a team-high 16 kills.
- Opposite Denzel Madrigal, middle blocker Pedro Zavatini, and Ayoube Hamadache also made their presence felt, all joining Christou in double-digit kill territory.
- Setter Alonzo Vega continued to orchestrate the Tigers' offense, dishing out a match-high 51 assists.
- Following their first defeat of the year, the Tigers (19-1) will return to Gosser Gymnasium to battle conference rival Georgetown College on Saturday, March 21.
With the opening frame underway, both teams came out fiercely competitive, trading points until the Phoenix found a steady offensive groove and put the Tigers down 11-7. Cumberland's success continued as Campbellsville was plagued by a series of attacking errors, allowing the deficit to stretch to 17-12. However, the Tigers did not back down. An aggressive kill from outside hitter
Ayoube Hamadache triggered a Campbellsville run, allowing the Tigers to seize the momentum and take an 18-17 lead. Even with the Tigers' newfound surge, the Phoenix stayed within striking distance, making a last-ditch run to erase a 24-21 Campbellsville advantage and steal the frame 26-24.
The start of set two saw intense competition with both teams exchanging side-outs. As the Tigers tried to break through Cumberland's energy, the Phoenix's dynamic offense gave them the upper hand. Despite the restless fight from Campbellsville, the Phoenix controlled the pace and ended the frame with a dominant 25-18 victory.
Hoping to extend the match into extra sets,
Denzel Madrigal sparked the Tigers' momentum early in the third frame with an impressive kill. From then on, the Tigers found familiar territory as setter
Alonzo Vega established a steady offensive rhythm. Even after the Phoenix rallied to tie the score at 16-16, the Tigers' fire did not dwindle, and they reclaimed the lead for the remainder of the set. Capitalizing on back-to-back Cumberland errors, Campbellsville closed out the third set 25-19.
The momentum from set three, however, did not make the Phoenix back down. Cumberland picked up right where they left off, with both teams battling on an even playing field early in the fourth set. The Phoenix continued to frustrate the Tigers by dragging out long rallies that consistently ended in Cumberland's favor. Despite Ovalle's restless defense in the backcourt, the Tigers struggled to convert transition plays into terminal kills, eventually falling short as the Phoenix clinched the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory.
