Buzzer beater curbs CU rally at Georgetown, 61-60

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - An offensive put back at the buzzer by Georgetown College's Tyrone Shelley pulled out a 61-60 victory for the home Tigers and curbed a second-half rally by Campbellsville University.

After Cedric Henderson hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to pull CU in front, 60-59, the Tigers were hoping to play heads up defense at the end. They did, playing to the game-plan, but for one step.

"The film will show if it (Shelley's shot) was before or after the horn, but the bottom line is it counted," said Keith Adkins, CU head coach. "I'm really speechless. We can sit here and talk about, 'Wow, what a comeback,' and 'I'm proud of how our guys responded,' but the bottom line is we didn't rebound.

"I don't know what it takes to reinforce that if we don't defensive rebound, we won't win. Why did we lose? We lost on an offensive rebound. We did exactly what we wanted to do. We wanted (Russ) Middleton to beat us. We got him to take an off balanced shot, but then we didn't defensive rebound, and that's the story of us."

Campbellsville rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit, 36-23, with a 19-8 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

After Henderson turned the ball over to Shelley with 13 minutes to play, he stole it back and slammed it down to pull within five points, 42-37, at the call of assistant coach Bryan Milburn: "Get to the rim!" The fast break sparked the maroon and gray offense.

Jordan Myers followed with a 3-pointer from the right wing to pull within a basket, 42-40. Kevin Bobson later drained a 3 from the corner to pull within a point, 46-45, for the first time since CU relinquished its early lead, 3-2, in the second minute of the game. Aharon Mims regained the lead for the maroon and gray with a layup, 47-46, with 8:37 to play.

The lead changed four more times before Shelley hit a 3-pointer to even the score, 53-53, and spark a seven-point run to put the orange and black Tigers up 57-53 with two minutes left.

Reggie Smith hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to pull back within a point, 59-58. Middleton missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity and Henderson grabbed the rebound for his own bonus trip to the charity stripe.

Henderson led CU and all scorers with 22 points, while Shelley led Georgetown with 17.

Campbellsville (7-3, 1-2 MSC) will travel to Asbury University on Tuesday, Dec. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip.
