Tigers escape Indiana Northwest with 64-61 win

GARY, Ind. -- Campbellsville University, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA, survived a road trip to Indiana University Northwest with a 64-61 victory Friday after leading by 18 in the second half.


The Tigers led 48-30 with 14 minutes left in the game, before the IUNW Redhawks began their slow and steady comeback. Nearly 10 minutes after the Tigers' claimed their largest lead of the night, the Redhawks dropped the margin to single-digits, 59-51 with 4:41 to play.

 


Sam Bellamy pulled IU Northwest within three points, 62-59, with an offensive put back with a minute left. Malik Thomas answered with a second-chance basket for the Tigers to give Campbellsville insurance, as CU allowed only two more points down the stretch by IUNW's Don Davenport.

CU trailed the first 12 1/2 minutes of the game before Jonas Bohm tied it, 20-20, with a free throw. The German senior followed with the Tigers' go-ahead basket, 22-20. The RedHawks quickly evened the score at 22 apiece but never regained the lead.

Campbellsville outscored Indiana Northwest 13-6 to enter halftime with a 35-28 lead.

Reggie Smith had nine points to lead CU in the first half and led all scorers with 17 points. Justin Latimore led IUNW with 16 points. Justin Ennis scored eight of his 14 points for the Tigers in the first half, while Davenport also had 14 for the Redhawks. Thomas also scored double figures for the Tigers with 11 points.

CU (10-3) will return home to Powell Athletic Center on Monday, Jan. 2 to host Union University at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on WLCU 88.7 FM and http://wlcufm.com.
