Heaton gets her 1,000th point as Lady Tigers roll, 100-67

WISE, Va.. - Melly Heaton knocked down two 3s and three free throws to join the Lady Tiger 1,000-Point Club as she and her teammates won at Virginia Wise, 100-67. The win, coupled with a Shawnee State loss at Georgetown, clinches at least a share of the Mid-South regular season title with three conference games remaining.

Heaton joined two of her teammates (Whitney Ballinger and Courtney Danis) and three Wise players (Kristin Mullins, Amber Carter and Meghan Rutherford) in the Club. All six were on the floor Saturday afternoon.

"I'm happy for Melly," said coach Ginger Colvin. "She didn't hit a thing the first half, but came out and hit that early 3 in the second and got things going. She's had a bad (ankle) sprain and still isn't at 100 percent.

The Lady Tigers (21-3, 14-1) used 12 points by Ballinger and 11 by Danis in building their 14-point half-time lead, 45-31. After leading 37-17 Virginia Wise went on a 14-4 run to close within two before two free throws by Megan Isaacs and a bucket by Mackenzie Lee closed out the first 20 minutes.

"Courtney is playing so good right now," said Colvin. "She scored the first sevens points of the game for us and that takes a little pressure off Whitney, who is drawing double and triple teams. She's also guarding the other team's best player."

Campbellsville scored 16 of the first 20 second-half points and the race to the finish was on.

Campbellsville scored 100 points for the first time this season and looks to add another century mark on Tuesday, when Colvin is in line for her 100th career victory. The Lady Tigers are 99-26 under Colvin in four seasons.

The Lady Tigers head back to Campbellsville for a four-game home stand, starting Tuesday (6 p.m.) against non-conference foe Oakland City University. They end their  regular season with match-ups against: St. Catharine (6 p.m.), Saturday, Feb. 19; Lindsey Wilson (6 p.m.), Thursday, Feb. 24; and University of the Cumberlands (2 p.m.), Saturday, Feb. 26.
