Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- It's been 34 years since Campbellsville women's tennis claimed its first conference championship. Saturday, the Lady Tigers added to their history with a pair of Mid-South Conference wins to finish unbeaten in conference action for their first MSC regular season championship.
Campbellsville beat Shawnee State University, 7-1, and University of Virginia's College at Wise, 6-1, in the final conference matches of 2011. The championship ends a seven-year run by Lindsey Wilson College, which CU beat 5-4 on Wednesday.
The Lady Tigers posted the historic 5-0 conference run with a lineup that included four freshmen and only two returners from last year's 1-13 season. After a 3-4 start to the 2011 season, Campbellsville has won its last 10 as it prepares for the MSC Tournament April 22-25.
"The girls kind of found their identity a little bit and filled the roles on the team after we made our trip to Auburn-Montgomery (mid-March). We had bad results down there, but they began to like each other a whole lot more," CU head coach Kyle Caven said of the turnaround. "With Lindsey Wilson being a seven-time champion, we're excited to have had the opportunity to go for it, and real excited that our girls stepped up and played for it and actually took it. It wasn't given to us."
Campbellsville (13-4), ranked No. 21 in the NAIA, began its week by knocking off the defending conference champion Blue Raiders on the road Wednesday, 5-4. CU then shut out Georgetown College, 9-0, on Thursday setting the title in clear focus with two matches to play.
Saturday, CU recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles in both matches and also won singles matches at positions 1-3. Due to weather, pro sets were played during singles action of both matches.
Anita Henestrosa, the 2010 MSC Co-Player of the Year, teamed up with freshman Tanya Murtagh at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 win against Shawnee State and an 8-1 win against Wise. First-year Lady Tigers Gleidys Salazar and Aspen Edwards won 8-0 and 8-4 in their two matches at No. 2 doubles, while freshman Kristen Hamrick and senior Stacey Drew split their matches at No. 3 doubles, beating Shawnee State 8-0, but falling to Wise's No. 3 doubles duo, 8-6.
In singles action, Henestrosa and Murtagh were 2-0 on the day, while Salazar, Edwards and Hamrick were 1-0. Drew did not complete a singles match.
Campbellsville's first women's tennis conference title came in 1977 by winning the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference (KWIC). CU is the fourth school to win a MSC tennis regular season title, according to MSC archives.
CU will conclude the regular season Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m. in a home match against Midway College.
