Tigers fall victim to Cumberlands' buzzer beater in 2OT

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - A buzzer-beating three-point basket by University of the Cumberlands' Matt Daniel capped off a double-overtime thriller in Powell Athletic Center Saturday afternoon as Campbellsville University fell short, 78-77.

The loss was the third of the season in Mid-South Conference play for the Tigers on a last-possession basket by the opposing team.

Cedric Henderson knocked down a pair of free throws with 5.8 seconds left to break a 75-75 tie, but Daniel worked his way down court and tossed up a 3 from the right wing as the horn sounded - one of only nine made baskets for the Patriots since halftime.

Campbellsville rallied from 38-29 halftime deficit to out-score Cumberlands, 28-19, in the second half. CU opened the half on a 9-3 run to pull within three points, 41-38, with 15:53 left in regulation.

The game remained a three- to four-point difference for the next eight minutes until Reggie Smith popped a 3-pointer to pull within one, 50-49. Bryton Taylor pulled the Tigers in front, 51-50, on the next possession with a defensive rebound and layup. Campbellsville pulled ahead 53-50, but the Patriots stayed in the game from the free throw line. Cumberlands final 12 points came from the free throw line in the last 10:20 of regulation, including a pair by Zavion Neely to tie the game 57-57 and force overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams allowed only 10 points. Once again, the Patriots could only score from the charity stripe until Daniel hit a jumper with 1:44 remaining to pull within a point, 64-63. The field goal ended a 16-minute, 0-of-11 Patriots' drought from the field.

Campbellsville worked its lead up to four, 67-63, on a Taylor 3-pointer, the Patriots rallied again with a tip-in at the buzzer, 67-67, by Patrico Leadon.

The second overtime was basket-for-basket all the way until the end.

In the first half, Campbellsville opened with a 17-6 lead before point guard Cedric Henderson went to the bench in foul trouble. With Henderson sitting the final 13 minutes of the half, Cumberlands went on a 26-4 run to gain an 11-point lead, 32-21 with 3:33 left in the half.

Henderson took led Campbellsville on the day with 20 points, eight assists and seven steals in his 36 minutes played, while Cumberlands' Matt Daniel led all scorers with 27 points in his 50 minutes played.

Three other Tigers posted double-figures offensively, with 15 points from Jordan Myers and 10 each from Jonas Bohm and Justin Ennis. Leadon had 15 for Cumberlands, followed by 12 from Benito Santiago, Jr.

Campbellsville (13-7, 2-6 MSC) will start the second half of the MSC schedule Thursday against Shawnee State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET in CU's Powell Athletic Center.
