Tigers knocked off by UVA-Wise, 56-43

Box Score WISE, Va. - The struggle to win on the road in the Mid-South Conference continued Saturday, for No. 25 Campbellsville University, falling 56-43 at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The CU loss moves Wise to 3-3 in the MSC and drops the Tigers to 1-4. CU head coach Keith Adkins said the loss carried three factors - attitudes, lack of aggression and acceptance of roles.

"We've gone from the 25th team in the country to dead last in the Mid-South Conference in a matter of three days, and that's unacceptable," Adkins said. "The only way to explain it is (personal) agendas, agendas, agendas. There are some guys that are not happy with their role, and we're going to have to go back to drawing up a rotation."

But Adkins also recognizes the effort by Wise, which has won its last two MSC games at home.

"Give credit to UVA-Wise. I think they're playing with a lot of confidence right now. They've got some good players and some really good role players. Let's face it, we got beat today," Adkins said.

Campbellsville led most of the first half but could not pull ahead by more than two possessions. The Tigers' largest lead was six, 12-6, after Jordan Myers hit a 3 six minutes into the game.

Travis Berry hit two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the first half to help give the Cavaliers a 26-21 halftime lead. Berry, who scored all five of Wise's 3-pointers, went on to lead all players with 21 points. Campbellsville was 3-of-19 beyond the arc.

"Coming into today, they had three guys on the roster who had hit a 3-pointer. One had 8-of-15, and that was Travis Berry … The fact that we gave him 10 (3-point) shots shows we weren't focused on what we were supposed to do," said Adkins.

Two minutes into the second half, Reggie Smith hit a jumper to pull the Tigers within three, 28-25, but CU never got that close again. Wise scored seven unanswered points to stretch its lead to double figures for the first time, 35-25. The margin dipped to single-digits only once the rest of the game, 44-35, on a Cedric Henderson basket with eight minutes to play.

Campbellsville shot 29.3 percent from the floor in the game, including 15.8 from 3-point range. Wise connected on 44.4 of its shots. Justin Ennis led CU with 10 points, followed by seven points from Smith and Jonas Bohm. Cedric Henderson scored a season-low six points and only one assist, while Kevin Bobson also had six.

Campbellsville (11-5, 1-4 MSC) will return home to Powell Athletic Center for a non-conference game Monday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. EST against Olivet Nazarene University. The Tigers will remain home for the rest of January, hosting five Mid-South Conference games, beginning Jan. 14 against St. Catharine College.
