CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Sixteen 3-pointers was only part of what helped Campbellsville University become the first team in more than five years to beat No. 9 Mountain State University twice in the same season. The Tigers downed the Cougars, 83-75, Tuesday night for Senior Night at Powell Athletic Center.
The Tigers snapped Mountain State's eight-game win streak by completing a single-season sweep over the Cougars, who had not lost twice to the same team in a season since falling twice to Union University in 2005-06.
"Mountain State is one of only a handful in the country that you can say they are there competing for a national championship every year. I'm humbled to have two wins against them this season," said Keith Adkins, CU head coach. "I've gotten to know (Mountain State head coach) Bob Bolen the last couple of years and have the upmost respect for him and how he does things. He's as good as it gets as a college basketball coach. It's an honor to play against him, and to get two wins, I'm thrilled for our guys."
CU redshirt sophomore
Kevin Bobson used four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Tigers gain and keep a lead in the closing minutes of the half. Mountain State closed the gap to tie it, 33-33 at the break after Mark Williams was fouled at the buzzer and sank three free throws.
"We did some really unintelligent things tonight that drive you nuts as a coach, but there was one thing I did not question tonight, and very rarely do I have to question it, and that's our effort," Adkins said. "At halftime I told them we played much better than to be tied, but we gave up too many offensive rebounds and we put them on the free throw line to much. That tells me they were being way more physical than they were."
While the Tigers gave up 18 second chances on the Cougars' offensive glass, Mountain State struggled to convert the opportunities into points.
Coming out of the half, David Nyarsuk gave the Cougars two leads in the opening minutes of the second period before
Justin Ennis used three of his five 3s to fuel a 15-2 run to go up double figures, 50-39. Mountain State worked the game back to six, 58-52, but got no closer. Campbellsville maintained its lead by hitting 14-of-20 free throws in the final two minutes.
Cedric Henderson contributed to most of the Tigers' 3s by pacing CU's offense with 13 assists while turning the ball over only twice. He also collected 15 points to secure a double-double for the night and added five defensive rebounds.
"Cedric has to be a first team All-American. I don't know if there's a better guard in the country," Adkins said. "He didn't shoot it well tonight, but he was able to penetrate and draw defenders to himself to create open shots for others on the perimeter."
Most of those open shots were by Ennis, who led CU with 21 points, while
Jordan Myers had 18 off four 3s and Bobson scored 14.
Williams led all scorers with 25 points for Mountain State, while Nyarsuk posted a double-double 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Before the game, CU honored its four seniors:
Jonas Bohm,
Cedric Henderson,
Reggie Smith and
Storrie Truitt.
The win is the Tigers' sixth in their last seven games since Jan. 26 as they prepare to close the regular season on the road against three teams receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll. Campbellsville enters the last two weekends of Mid-South Conference play only two spots out of first place at 7-6 in the MSC standings. Outside of the conference, the Tigers are 12-2 with an 8-0 record against non-conference teams that appeared in the 2011 NAIA Tournament.
"If we can just get one or two more the next week and a half, this is a big chip for us. There aren't many teams out there that can say they've swept the likes of Mountain State, Union University, Olivet Nazarene, Life and then a good non-conference win with West Virginia Tech," Adkins said. "It's been a good non-conference season for us to say the least, and hopefully that will make a difference when it comes down to people voting for the Top 25."
Campbellsville (19-8) will travel to St. Catharine College on Saturday for a Mid-South Conference game at 4 p.m. ET.
