MOBILE, Ala. -- Lady Tiger tennis opened its second national tournament appearance Tuesday with a strong pool play victory over Bethel College (Ind.), 5-0, to clinch a spot in Thursday's semifinal. Campbellsville University now shares the lead in Pool B of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Tournament, which is being played at the Mobile Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
"It's always good to get a win at the beginning of a tournament in pool play and to not play from behind," said
Kyle Caven, CU tennis coach. "We have a long way to go but hopefully a good start will get us going."
CU (14-6) will meet Palm Beach Atlantic University in the final pool play match Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. CDT. The winner will lock up the No. 1 seed in Thursday's semifinal. PBAU defeated Bethel, 5-0, in the afternoon session Tuesday.
Campbellsville began its Tuesday match by sweeping all three doubles. The Lady Tigers had not trouble putting together a pair of 8-2 victories in their first two doubles matches, while
Lindy Charity and
Stacey Drew were forced to play a tie-breaker at No. 3 doubles. CU was on pace to win all six singles matches. The decisive wins in singles play came at No. 4 and No. 5 from freshman
Jenna Sallee and sophomore
Aspen Edwards.
In Pool A, Cedarville University and Emmanuel College are both tied for the lead with a pair of wins Tuesday over Dallas Baptist University and Indiana Wesleyan University. Emmanuel and Cedarville will play each other Wednesday to determine their seeds in the semifinals.
