PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Campbellsville University men's cross country finished second and the women finished third in a three-team, season-opening race against Lindsey Wilson College and host Shawnee State University Friday afternoon.
Shawnee State won both races on the day, while the Tigers took second place over the Blue Raiders by eight points, 60-68, in the men's race and LWC claimed second in the women's race.
"I'm really happy with how both races finished. We had a couple of scary incidents in both races but everyone is healthy. We can put our first race behind us and look towards out next race for some personal bests and some solid finishes."
In the men's race, junior Andrew Simmons led the Tigers with a time of 28:49. He was the first of seven Tigers in consecutive order that counted toward the team scores. Sophomore runner Kyle Howdyshell and freshman Joey Hartlage were close behind Simmons with times of 29:23 and 29:42 to finish 16th and 17th as individuals, respectively.
The other Tigers scoring team points in the race were freshman Micheal Dowell (30:32), freshman Wade Harris (31:01), senior Garrett Baker (32:20) and freshman Dylan Ford (33:03).
Individual runners for the Tigers, which did not count in team points, were Luke Camp (33:08), Bradley Harris (33:46), William Pearson (34:00) and Danny Hess (34:11).
On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Johnson finished 10th overall with a time of 21:40. Lauren Little (22:24), Summer Rines (22:25) and Rebekah Southwood (22:40) finished 15th, 16th, and 17th, consecutively to round out the top four runners for the Lady Tigers. Senior Natasha Janes and freshman Mallory Vest were fifth and sixth for CU with times of 23:19 and 23:39. The final three runners for CU were Maggie Calvert (24:47), Megan Charity (24:58) and Jennifer Hatley (24:59).
Campbellsville will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio next Friday, Sept. 7, for the Queen City Invitational.
