BEREA, Ky. – Each Tiger and Lady Tiger ran a personal best for the 2012 season Saturday, as Campbellsville University took home top prize in the women's race and second in the men's race at the Berea College's Judge Wilson Invitational.
The Lady Tigers posted four Top 10 finishes to beat Lindsey Wilson College and win their first meet of the season. Sarah Johnson led the pack for CU running a season-best time of 20:41 in the 5K race. Following behind her were Lady Tiger veterans Rebekah Southwood (6th, 21:09), Lauren Little (7th, 21:20) and Summer Rines (8th, 21:20).
Shelby Courtney (12th, 21:39), Natasha Janes (18th, 22:20) and Mallory Vest (19th, 22:25) each finished in the top 20 with season-high times. Maggie Calvert was the other CU runner in the race, posting a time of 23:20 for her collegiate PR.
In the men's race, Brett Pierce led the way with a lifetime PR of 27:41 to finish eighth individually, while Andrew Simmons with season-best 27:58 in 10th place.
A total of 12 Tigers competed in the meet, with one of the largest personal time improvements coming from senior Garrett Baker, who is in his second season as a runner. Baker finished 28th with a lifetime PR of 29:53, shaving nearly two minutes off his best career time and coming in more than five minutes under his time in the Berea Invitational from 2011.
Finishing ahead of Baker in places 11 through 26 were six Tigers: Dylan Ford (11th, 28:04), Joey Hartlage (14th, 28:24), Kyle Howdyshell (15th, 28:38), Bradley Harris (17th, 28:47), Michael Dowell (23rd, 28:38) and Wade Harris (26th, 29:47). Luke Camp was 33rd as an individual with a time of 31:09. William Pearson ran 31:41 and finished 37th, while Danny Hess was 40th in a time of 32:00.
Berea College won the men's race.
Campbellsville will return to action Saturday, Sept. 22 at the University of Rio Grande Invitational in Rio Grande, Ohio.
