RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Saturdays continue to be kind to Campbellsville University cross country. Last week, the Lady Tigers took first and the men finished runner-up in Berea, Ky. Saturday was more of the same at the 2012 Patty Forgey Rio Grande Invitational.
The Lady Tigers had six Top 10 finishers and claimed 19 team points to win the five-team meet. Ohio Christian University was a distance second with Cumberland University on its heels.
Sarah Johnson paced the Lady Tigers with a time of 21:08 to finish runner-up individually. Summer Rines was fourth in 21:45, while Lauren Little (21:57), Bekah Southwood (22:09) and Shelby Courtney (22:38) were sixth through eighth. Natasha Janes rounded out the Top 10 with a time of 22:38.
Megan Charity finished just outside the Top 10 with an 11th-place finish and personal record of 23:24. Mallory Vest was 12th at 23:33. Other CU runners were Maggie Calvert (14th, 24:18) and Jennifer Hatley (20th, 25:27).
In the men's 8K, freshman Brett Pierce led the Tigers with a third-place finish of 28:05, followed by a time of 28:12 by Andrew Simmons in fourth place. Five Tigers piled in from ninth to 13th in the individual standings. Joey Hartlage was ninth with a time of 28:58, followed by Kyle Howdyshell (29:23), Michael Dowell (29:29), Bradley Harris (29:51) and Wade Harris (30:04). Dowell's time was a personal best.
Other CU runners were William Pearson in 24th at 33:14 and Danny Hess in 29th at 33:34.
Campbellsville will return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Greater Louisville Classic.
