Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Traveling to Ohio was not friendly to Top 20 teams Thursday night as the No. 20 Campbellsville University Tigers joined No. 8 Lindsey Wilson College in falling victim in the Mid-South Conference. The Tigers fell 73-57 at the University of Rio Grande, while Shawnee State University hosted a 70-66 upset of Lindsey Wilson.
Campbellsville fell behind 8-0 early and quickly trailed by 12 en route to their first loss to Rio since the 1991 NAIA National Tournament.

After trailing by 12, the Tigers chipped away at the deficit to take their first lead of the night, 17-16, on a Sean Scott 3-pointer with 10:09 remaining in the opening half. Scott, a junior point guard from Chicago, Ill., was making his Campbellsville debut after being ruled eligible earlier in the day by the NAIA. Junior forward Chris Smith also made his Tiger debut Thursday night.
After Rio quickly regained the lead, Malik Thomas tied it 20-20 and Scott helped keep the game close with his eighth point of the first half, 23-22. Jordan Myers later hit a 3 to pull back within a point, 26-25, with 5:27 remaining, but Rio Grande closed the half on a 13-0 run, led by six points from Kaleb Kimber.
Down 39-25 at halftime, Scott opened the second half for the Tigers' with a 3, but he would not score again to finish his debut with 11 points.
Vernon Payne, who missed a good portion of the first half with foul trouble, scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half before fouling out with just under five minutes remaining. Justin Ennis added 10 points for CU.
Rio never let the Tigers close the gap in the second half. The Tigers pulled within 11 multiple times, the last on a 3-pointer by Darius Clement with 5:15 to play. Rio's largest lead in the final minutes was 18 points.
Freshman guard D.D. Joiner led Rio with 14 points in the game, followed by 12 each from Bruce Komakech and Karl Moore.
Campbellsville struggled from the field, hitting 34 percent, including 39 percent from 3-point range, and also struggled at the free throw line, shooting 57 percent. Rio hit 46.6 percent of its shots and 72 percent of its free throws in the game. Rio won the battle of the boards, 41-33.
The win is Rio's second in the Mid-South Conference this season and only its sixth since joining the MSC in 2009-10. It snaps a seven-game losing streak to Campbellsville (9-4, 3-3 MSC) which falls to fifth-place in the Mid-South Conference behind Shawnee State.
Campbellsville will travel to Shawnee State (7-6, 4-2 MSC) for the second game of its road trip Saturday at 4 p.m. EST. Rio (6-5, 2-4 MSC) will host Lindsey Wilson College (14-2, 4-2 MSC), also at 4 p.m.
