NASHVILLE, Tenn. – If there was any doubt of jetlag from their recent trip to Hawaii, Campbellsville University Lady Tiger basketball put that to rest and swept its competition in the Music City Classic. CU beat Hiwassee College in the final game of the tournament, 117-30.
Campbellsville used defensive pressure in yesterday's game but the Lady Tigers went to the boards today and outmatched the seven-member roster from Hiwassee.
CU outrebounded the Tigers from Hiwassee, 67 to 27. The Lady Tigers had exactly the same offensive rebounds (26) as Hiwassee had total rebounds.
Campbellsville came into the game with a huge height advantage over Hiwassee. The Lady Tigers tallest player stands at six feet three and their roster sports nine players over five feet 10.
Hiwassee's tallest player, Atlanta Ervin, stands at six feet one, but the sophomore from Rhea County, Tenn. only scored one field goal.
In the first half, CU scored 34 points in the paint and the taller players just overmatched Hiwassee.
Lindsey Burd scored eight quick points in the first six minutes of play. Fellow forward Mary Jehlik also pitched in eight points. Katie Allen was the other Lady Tiger to score eight points in the first half.
Abby Miller, Ellen Sholtes, and Kristen Jacob all recorded five rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play, as Campbellsville led 56-12 at the break. Miller ended with a career high in rebounds with 10 and also had six assists, a career high.
To start the second half, CU forced five quick turnovers and went on a 17-6 run to make the score 83-18.
Caroline Owen knocked down back-to-back three point baskets to lead the Lady Tigers during the run.
The Lady Tigers shared the workload as every roster member scored for the second straight game.
Macie Spence (12), Lindey Young (12), Madison Clements (11), Lindsey Burd (11), Katie Allen (10), Mary Jehlik (10) and Caroline Owen (10) all scored in double digits for the Lady Tigers. Spence's total was a career high and Young's tied a career high.
CU finished with 66 points in the paint and 30 second-chance points. 80 of the 107 total points came from the bench.
Campbellsville shot 49-for-88 (55.7 percent) compared Hiwassee's 11-for-59 (18.6 percent).
Hiwassee College drops to 2-9 on the year.
With the win, Campbellsville moves to 10-1 on the year and will conclude its 2013-14 non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Dec, 31 as it will play host to Milligan College. Game time is set to start at 6:00 ET in Powell Athletic Center.
