Tigers complete three-game sweep at Cumberlands

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Campbellsville University produced a single run in six of the 10 innings played Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers won their first extra innings game of the season, 6-5, at the University of the Cumberlands.

The win completed a weekend Mid-South Conference series sweep for the Tigers (8-1, 3-0 MSC).  Of the eight teams that played MSC games this weekend, Campbellsville is the only team to win all three games. CU defeated Cumberlands 12-2 and 3-2 in a doubleheader Saturday.

Tanner Nielsen reached on an error to lead off the game and scored on a wild pitch to give CU an early 1-0 lead, but Cumberlands responded with a two-RBI double by Blake Debacher in the bottom of the first to gain a 2-1 lead.

In the second, Michael Bush drew a one-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Keaton Neeb, who finished the day 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.

With the game tied, 2-2, Cumberlands' centerfielder Hibraim Cordova doubled to left with one out in the bottom of the third and scored on a wild pitch from CU starter Matt Robertson to regain the lead.

Campbellsville evened the score again in the fourth, as Josh Potter doubled to center with one out and scored on an Aaron Schwoebel single. Robertson retired the Patriots in order in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers took the lead in the fifth for the first time since the first inning. Nielsen led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sac fly by Brandon Johnson. Robertson once again held the Patriots scoreless entering the sixth. Angelo Simmons gave CU a two-run cushion with an RBI double to score Schwoebel, but Patriots catcher John Doolittle also collected an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to keep it a one-run game, 5-4.

Robertson exited the game with two outs in the sixth. He allowed four earned runs off seven hits and struck out six. Jacob Phillips closed out the sixth and pitched through the eighth without allowing a walk or hit.

CU threatened to strengthen its lead in the top of the eighth, as Potter led off with a single and Bush reached on an error to put runners on the corners with no outs. The Patriots intentionally walked Neeb to load the bases with one out, but Donovan Feenstra struck out Simmons and then got a pop fly by Nielsen to end the inning and leave three on base.

Drew Pettit took over on the mound for Campbellsville looking for his third save of the season. However, the senior lefty hit his leadoff batter and gave up a pair of two-out singles to tie the game, 5-5. He also missed on a 3-1 pitch to load the bases, but got a pop out to escape the jam and force extra innings after his first blown save of the season.

Campbellsville pushed the eventual winning run across in the 10th, when Neeb singled to shallow right field to score Bush, who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third after an error put Schwoebel on base. The Tigers stranded two but Mason Yates came on in the bottom of the 10th to record his first save of the season, giving Pettit his first win.

Travis Hayes and Potter joined Neeb as the other two-hit Tigers in the game. Victor Morel was the only two-hit player for Cumberlands.

In the three-game series, Campbellsville averaged seven runs and 11 hits per game.

The Tigers have now won six straight entering the third week of the season. CU will travel to Union College (Ky.) on Wednesday, Feb. 27 for a 3 p.m. game, and then will return to MSC action March 1-2 at St. Catharine College for the Patriots' conference opener.
