Tigers complete season sweep of Cumberlands, 69-53

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – It was a different gym, but the same result Saturday as Campbellsville University won its fourth straight men's basketball game and beat the University of the Cumberlands by 15-plus, 69-53, for the second time in four weeks.

"We were very focused on what we were doing. We weren't content with what we did Thursday night, and we still aren't. We have a lot of work to do if we want to get back into this thing, and a lot of it will be on the road," CU head coach Keith Adkins said.

"This Cumberlands team right now is banged up. I'm not taking anything away from what we did or our team, but they're going through a lot of injuries. We exposed a couple of things that they wanted to do and we were able to take advantage of some issues".

The win locked up a spot in the Mid-South Conference Tournament for the Tigers (9-6 MSC) and pulled them within a game and a half of second place Georgetown College (11-5). The University of Pikeville and Shawnee State University are 10-5 in conference action.

The game was in the Tigers' control for all but a few minutes in the first half. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, Campbellsville saw Cumberlands post a 6-0 run to tie the game, 11-11, but Campbellsville quickly broadened its lead to double digits, 25-14, with six minutes to play in the opening half.

CU junior Jordan Myers, who was instrumental in the early 5-0 run, posted another 5-0 run late in the second half to stretch the Tigers' lead to 14, 34-20, en route to a 35-21 half-time score. The Academic All-American candidate posted 12 points in the first half and finished with a career-high 19 points in the game.

"I thought he was ready to play," Adkins said. "Typically he's going to make shots for us, but I thought he was as impressive inside the arc as out today."
CU opened the second half the same way it started the game, scoring first on a free throw, which sparked a 5-0 run. Myers capped the run with a basket to give CU its first 20-point lead, 42-21, and Campbellsville maintained a 10-possession lead until about three minutes left to play. The Patriots scored 10 of the last 14 points in the game to pull within 16 at the final horn.

Campbellsville held Cumberlands to 16.7 percent shooting from 3-point range (3-of-18) and forced 16 turnovers. The Tigers shot only 6-of-17 from beyond the arc, but the 3s came at key times to keep extending CU's lead. Myers led CU with three 3-pointers.

Vernon Payne followed Myers' lead with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers, while Malik Thomas scored 12 and Justin Ennis had 10.

Steve Goins had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cumberlands and Benito Santiago Jr. had 10 points.

Campbellsville (16-9, 9-6 MSC) will travel the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Thursday at 8p.m. and then will play at the Unversity of Pikeville on Saturday at 4 p.m.
