Campbellsville (30-18) will face the University of Rio Grande in an elimination game Sunday morning at 11 a.m. EDT. The winner will then play Lindsey Wilson at 2 p.m. for the Mid-South Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NAIA Opening Round Tournament.
Both teams were held hitless in the first, but Brandon Johnson collected a leadoff single for the Tigers to start the second inning. After a sac bunt by Carlos Torres, Aaron Schwoebel hit a triple off the wall in right-centerfield to give Campbellsville a 1-0 lead. He was left stranded after a pair of pop ups, the first of 10 Tigers left on base in the game.
Sean Bouthilette did not allow a LWC hit in the first two innings, but Mitchell Osnowitz singled up the middle to start the third inning. Russ Morse followed with a double to put the duo in scoring position before Derek Shugart and Leandro Perez hit back-to-back RBI singles to gain the lead, 2-1. Before the inning was over, Campbellsville gave up five off six hits and an error. Jeff Kerian and Jeandro Andino also had RBIs in the inning.
Campbellsville continued to find holes in the Blue Raiders' defense, but was unable to push another run across. The Tigers left two runners on in each the top of the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. CU also stranded one runner in the seventh.
LWC used a couple of ground ball fielder's choices to get out of the fourth without giving up a run, and then escaped a runners on second and third jam in the third with an infield pop-up. In the sixth, Schwoebel singled to right-center with two outs and Angelo Simmons reached on an error, but both were left on base after a strike out ended the inning.
The Blue Raiders threatened to extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Morse stated the inning with a double, followed by a one-out singles by Perez and Michael Rosario too load the bases. Bret DeRooy, who was on in relief of Bouthilette, struck out the next two hitters to hold the score at 5-1.
DeRooy struggled in the seventh though, giving up singles to Kerian and Manuel Ozoria to start the inning. Andino reached on an error to load the bases. DeRooy then hit Osnowitz to score one and gave up an RBI single to Morse. Mason Yates took over on the mound and got a strike out and pop up for the first two outs, before allowing a two-RBI single to Rosario. Kerian grounded out to second to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Johnson led off with a bunt single, followed by a Torres walk, but CU once again left two on.
Schwoebel hit 3-for-4 to lead Campbellsville, while Johnson and Michael Bush each had two hits. Morse was 3-for-4 for LWC. Perez, Rosario, Ozoria and Andino each had two hits.
England Smith pitched the complete game for Lindsey Wilson, striking out four and allowing only one earned run off eight hits and one walk.
