CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — It wasn't the prettiest game in the world, but Campbellsville shook off a sloppy start to defeated St. Catharine tonight, 69-55.
The Lady Patriots led 14-11 midway through the first half before CU (17-2, 8-1) went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a free throw and layup by Ellen Sholtes. During the run, Kristen Jacob, Lindsey Burd and Daizah Kimberland all hit baskets.
"We were really, really flat tonight for whatever reason," said coach Ginger Colvin. "St. Catharine has played with everybody in the conference this season and I guess we looked at their record and thought we could cruise to a win.
"It's not that we did anything really bad, we just didn't do anything really good."
Heather Sandlin kept St. Catharine in the game with 10 first-half points. Rianne Hofstraat was shackled with three fouls and had to sit the bench for SCC (3-12, 1-8) for the final three minutes of the half.
Sandlin ended up with a game-high 19 points to lead SCC.
The Lady Tigers went on a 14-6 run at the start of the second half to lead 43-29, but Carol Ruiz-Lopez hit two quick baskets and Sasha Ruiz-Lopez hit an old-fashioned three-point play to close to within 47-43 at the 8:20 mark.
By Mary Jehlik took over from there, scoring eight of her 14 points to help CU pull away at the end.
Campbellsville had four players in double figures, led by Kimberland's 16. She was joined by Sholtes, (15), Jehlik (14) and Hayley Hellyer (12).
"We found a way to win , and that's a good thing," said Colvin. "We missed some 3s, but our focus was to go inside."
CU forced 23 SCC turnovers and collected 15 steals, led by Katie Allen's five. Allen also had five assists and Caroline Owen three. Campbellsville led St. Catharine 13-7 in assists and only turned the bal over 11 times.
It was first time all season the Lady Tigers haven't hit as least one 3-pointer in the first half. As a matter of fact, the Lady Tigers went 0-for-7 for the game and ended an 176-game streak without something dropping from beyond the arc. The last conference game without a 3 was also on Feb, 16, 2006 against Lindsey Wilson in a 65-62 win.
The Lady Tigers stay in the friendly confines of Powell Athletic Center when they host Lindenwood University – Belleville (Ill.) on Saturday. Tipoff at 2:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (WLCU 88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
