Campbell leads CU in miraculous comeback

Box Score

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Campbellsville University and Philander Smith College needed two overtime periods late Friday night to decide a winner between two NAIA Top 17 teams. The No. 2 Tigers came back from being down 16 points in the first half and shocked the No. 17 Panthers, 107-102.

D'Von Campbell filled up the stat sheet with a career-high 33 points. The senior from Arlington, Texas also dished out nine assists while only turning the ball over once in 49:48 of play. He sat out for only one possession in the first half, playing in front of his mother and brother for the first time all year.

"I didn't think it was possible to be so mad at a team and so proud of a team in the same night in the same game," said CU head coach Keith Adkins. "But that is exactly the emotions I felt at halftime and when that game was over. Overall it was a great comeback win and showed how good we can be when we play."

BOX SCORE

Campbell was the hero for the Tigers late in the second half, hitting a 3-pointer from the left wing with time expiring in regulation. CU and Philander Smith were tied at 82 going into the first overtime period.

With 3:47 left on the clock in the first overtime, Elliott Young gave the Tigers a 87-86 lead with his second 3-pointer, but Philander Smith came answered, going up 88-87.

Young then followed suite with two free throws after being fouled, pushing CU ahead 89-88 with 2:02 remaining, and Campbell gave the Tigers a 93-90 lead with 20 seconds remaining.

Philander Smith did not give up. The Panthers' Nelson Ollie hit a triple from the right wing to knot the game at 93 and send the game into double OT.

Campbell hit two free throws to start the second OT period and drained a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up 99-93, a lead CU never relinquished. The dagger though came from Miles Rice. The sophomore guard hit his second 3-pointer to put the nail in the coffin, 104-97.

"The way he played tonight there is no way there is anyone better at our level than him," said Adkins about Campbell. "He controlled the basketball game for us from the point guard position. The last-second 3-pointer was nothing special as far as Xs and Os on a game plan. We thought they would foul us and not give us a chance to tie it, but they played it out. He got a good look all on his own, and his talents took over."

The Tigers survived after being down 16 points in the first half at the 5:17 mark and 14 at the intermission. Philander Smith was lightening-hot in the first 20 minutes, hitting 63 percent of its shots and 66 percent from behind the arc.

"We weren't focused or ready to play and they were," said Adkins. "It was the first time that someone looked at us as a highly-ranked team and came out and punched us in the mouth. We didn't respond well but we came out as the aggressor in the second half. We are going to get everyone's best shot being a highly-ranked team, and we have to do better than that."

CU saw arguably its two toughest players to defend, Damontre Harris and Eric Gaines, both get into foul trouble, and the Panthers were able to take advantage.

Harris played only 11-plus minutes overall after picking up two quick fouls early in each half. He eventually fouled out at the 4:43 mark in regulation with three points.

Gaines supposedly picked up his fifth foul with one minute remaining in regulation and was forced to go out. But the official book only had Gaines with four fouls and CU was able to catch it with one minute remaining in the second OT period. Gaines finished with 14 points and tied for a game-high 11 rebounds with Young.

But the two stars for CU were not needed, as Campbell finished hitting 9-of-20 overall (45 percent) with seven 3-pointers. His 33 points led at scorers, as Philander Smith had Aquil Baynard finish with 30 points.

Young played valuable minutes in Harris' absence and finished with 12 points off the bench in addition to his 11 rebounds.

Darius Clement kept the Tigers within striking distance in the first half and carried the team, hitting 3-of-4 from long range and finished with 15 first half points. The senior guard finished with 20 points.

"Both Elliott and Darius played very well when we needed them," said Adkins. "Elliott had big moments when Tre' (Damontre Harris) fouled out and Darius Clement gave D'Von a big boost when he got tired late."

Campbellsville (14-1) will return to action at Philander Smith College tomorrow afternoon at 3p.m. EST. CU will take on John Brown University, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25. JBU was defeated by Lindsey Wilson College, 81-64, earlier Friday.
