No. 9 Tigers sink SSU, 75-56, to set up MSC title bought

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – All of the "what ifs" fell in line perfectly Thursday night. No. 9 Campbellsville University will now host No. 7 Georgetown College at 4 p.m. Saturday in a regular season Mid-South Conference co-championship game in CU's Powell Athletic Center.

Campbellsville ran away with a 75-56 win over Shawnee State University Thursday night to avenge a road loss from earlier in the season, while No. 3 University of Pikeville and Georgetown both were upset on the road. The winner of Saturday's game will share the MSC season crown with UPike.

"I told our guys after the game, 'forget about what Georgetown is playing for, let's talk about what we're playing for now, and that's a piece of the Mid-South Conference regular season championship. Since we can't win it outright, we'll take the next best thing, and that happens with a big W Saturday against Georgetown,'" CU head coach Keith Adkins said.

If Campbellsville pulls off the upset Saturday, it will be only the second regular season MSC title for the Tigers, with the first coming in 2009-10, which was also the last time both the CU men and women claimed conference crowns in the same year.

BOX SCORE

Adkins' team controlled Thursday's home game with Shawnee State, holding the Bears' offense to less than 60 points, less than a week after holding St. Catharine College in the 40s.

"We shot the basketball well, and once again we got our number," Adkins said. "When I talk about the number, I mean 65 or fewer. Our goal from here on out is to keep our opponents at 65 points or fewer. I think if we do that, when win the rest of our games."

The Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor in the win, including 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the arc. Senior guard D'Von Campbell led the way with an 8-of-11 3-point performance to finish with a game-high 29 points.

"It's great to be home," Adkins said. "After a tough stretch going to Pikeville and Cumberlands, two great teams that will be in Kansas City, and then going to St. Cats, that's three road games late in the season, and man, that takes its toll on you. We haven't shot it great, but when D'Von makes shots it changes everything, and when I say everything, I mean everything."

Campbell helped open the offense for Rob Robinson and Miles Rice to knock down two 3s and Elliot Young, Quin Richardson and DeMarcus Page each had one. The outside shooting also opened up the post for Damontre Harris, who finished with his MSC leading 16th double-double (12 points, 15 rebounds) and added two assists and two blocks.

Eric Gaines led the Tigers with a career-high eight assists and had only one turnover.

Campbellsville never trailed Thursday. Campbell hit back-to-back 3s to break a 14-14 tie and spark a 10-0 run. The Tigers never looked back.

Sean Elliott, who led Shawnee State with 19 points, cut the margin to five points, 25-20, with a 3 at the 8:44 mark in the first half, and Nick Tingle later made it a four-point game, 26-22. However, CU closed the final six minutes of the first half on an 11-4 run to lead by 11 at the break, 37-26.

The lead only continued to grow in the final 20 minutes, with Campbell hitting four of the Tigers' eight second-half 3s. An early Harris dunk gave him his double-double, while Richardson's lone 3 pushed the Tigers ahead by 20, 57-37, with just under 10 minutes to play. Shawn Johnson and Rice both helped make it a 21-point game, and then CU topped out at a 22-point margin twice in the final two and a half minutes.

Shawnee's closest margin in the second half was 12 points, 47-35, with 12:54 to play.

Campbellsville out rebounded the Bears 38 to 26.

CU now prepares for the MSC title bought Saturday at 4 p.m. in Powell Athletic Center against Georgetown. Prior to the game, the Tigers will honor seniors D'Von Campbell, Darius Clement, Eric Gaines and Damontre Harris.

"We have to go out and absolutely compete and have that cliché refuse to lose attitude and find a way to win. I don't care what the score is," Adkins said. "We need to approach this like the conference championship game next week, so we mentally prepare ourselves for that big game, and what a better stage to do that than going into the conference tournament."

The game will be broadcast live on 88.7 The Tiger and televised on WLCU-TV (Comcast 10) in Campbellsville, as well as streamed live online via the CU Stretch Internet portal, http://porta.stretchinternet.com/camp.
