Freshmen steal the show at DePauw Invitational

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — For the third consecutive weekend, Campbellsville indoor track and field left competition with more NCCAA cuts and in the process, broke a few more school records at the DePauw Invitational.

The Tigers started out the day on a very positive note by winning the men's 4x200 meter relay in 1:34.80. The relay consisted of Brandon BattleJohannesburg BoulwareJaron Jacksonand Keyshon Truitt

Battle was the lone Tiger in the 60 meter finals by qualifying with a time of 7.24 seconds in the prelims, and running 7.26 seconds in the finals, which was good enough for sixth. Later on in the day Battle posted another sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.48.

The Tigers didn't stop there and had six freshmen shine this weekend.

Freshman Wiliam Bret Crawford ran a 4:31.72 in the men's mile placing sixth and putting three points on the board. Crawford finished the day by posting a second place, eight-point finish in the 600-meter dash and set a new school record of 1:28.94.

Four other Tiger freshmen shined, as Will Ballard helped CU in scoring by placing fouth in the 600 meter — good enough for five points en route to a time of 1:31.63. Corbin Harris placed second and scored eight points in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:48.30.

For the third consecutive weekend, Garland Webb had another big day in the long jump. He placed second and earned eight points with a jump of 6.63 meters. Another Freshman, Paxton Wiley, also helped the Tigers score today in the high jump placing seventh (two points) with a jump of 1.80 meters.

Senior Stuart Nichols improved on his NCCAA mark in the weight throw. His previous throw from last week was 13.24 meters, this week he eclipsed that mark with a throw of 13.28 meters. Conner Stockton joined Nichols in qualifying for the weight throw with a throw of 13.05 meters.

On the women's side Deja Thompson reclaimed her school record in the weight throw with a throw of 12.95 meters.  She placed fourth and scored five points and also earning a spot to go to the NCCAA Championships set for next week.

Mallory Vest helped the Lady Tigers in scoring by placing eighth place in the mile (one point) with a time of 5:54.97. Another freshman standout Gracie Martin picked up an eighth-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.02.

Lastly, another freshman, Julianna Bradley, had enough speed in the women's 600-meter dash to place seventh (two points) with a time of 1:57.60.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will now prepare for the NCCAA National Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, February 19th-20th, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.
