Foxworth, men's medley relay highlight Day 1 of swimming

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Bailey Foxworth and the men's 200-yard medley relay team headlined Campbellsville University's Day 1 at the Mid-South Conference Swim Championships at the Kingsport Aquatics Center.

Foxworth finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and scored 10 individual points, the most of any CU swimmer on Day 1. She also swam the third leg of the fifth-place women's 200-yard medley relay team.

The team set 11 season- or career-best marks in the morning preliminaries and bettered those with seven more marks in the Day 1 finals.

"Today was a fantastic start to this year's conference meet," said coach Casey Smith. "I am thrilled with our results so far.

 

"We have been working very hard these past few weeks and it is clearly paying off so far. I am very proud of all of our athletes, and am really looking forward to see what tomorrow brings."

Foxworth, a senior from Georgetown, Ky., led the charge for five women and two men, all of whom qualified for the finals in either the 500 freestyle, 200 IM or 50 freestyle events.

Foxworth's time of 5:34.73 eclipsed her best time (5:35.50) of the season. She swam a 5:25.93 in the final. Rebekah Tilton knocked nearly six seconds (6:21.03) off her season best and five seconds (6:21.03) off her career best. Katlynn Lanham also beat her season- and career-best time by nine seconds, finishing in 7:20.03.

The men's medley relay set a national standard, knocking four seconds off their previous best with a 1:49.17. The team was made up of Chris Telman, Devon Cross, Alex Meade and Brandon Wiseheart.

The women's relay team of Jessica Cook, Jen Lewis, Bailey Foxworth and Shelby Mattingly beat their previous best by nearly six seconds for a fifth-place finish.

Katy Lewis and Emily Hunter both qualified for the consolation final with ninth and 12th place finishes, respectively, in the 200-yard IM. They finished fifth and sixth in the finals, respectively.

Lewis erased nearly eight seconds off her season- and career-best time with a 2:23.84 in the prelims. Hunter slipped into the consolation finals with a season-best time of 2:32.40. Hunter's time of 2:28.54 beat her morning time by nearly four seconds.

Alex Meade joined the consolation final in the men's 200 IM with a 12th place finish and a career-best 2:21.97. He was 12th in the final.

In the women's 50 freestyle, Shelby Mattingly (8th) and Jessica Cook (11th) qualified for the consolation final with times of :25.78 and :26.58, respectively. Cook's time was a season and career best. Mattingly and Cook finished 11th and 12th respectively,

Christophe Telman finished 11th for the men in the 50 freestyle with a season- and career-best time of :22.91. He swam in final and finished 11th and bettered his morning time with a :22.82.

The women and men's 800-yard freestyle relay teams swam season bests, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.  The women had an 8:31.20 and the men an 8:04.42.The women (Katy Lewis, Bailey Foxworth, Shelby Mattingly and Jen Lewis) knocked 10 seconds off their season best with an 8:31.20. The men (Christophe Telman, Eduardo Doilin, Brandon Wiseheart and Alex Meade) were nearly 25 seconds faster than their season best at 8:04.42.

Daniel Fathergill finished 15th in the men's 500 freestyle in 6:00.72.

Others swimming, but not qualifying in the 50 freestyle, were:

WOMEN: Elise Shainfeld, 28.42, 17th,  season best; Maria Archila, :28.92, 18th; Katie Miller, :29.19, 20th; Casey Galyon, :29.53, 21st; Lindsey Buckman, :31, 22nd; Morgan Bryant, :31.34, 24th, season best; Meika Hamblin, :31.84, 27th, season best; Amber Wright, :32.20, 28th.

MEN: Brandon Wiseheart, 23:99, 18th season and career best; Devon Cross, :24.33, 20th, season best; Eduardo Doilin, :24.49, 21st; Austin Tucker, :25.02, 22nd.

University of the Cumberlands leads the women's competition with 146 points. Lindsey Wilson 128, Lindenwood-Belleville 110, Life 71, Campbellsville 63, Bethel 45 and St. Catharine 14.

Lindenwood leads the men's side with 166 points. University of the Cumberlands 151.5, Lindsey Wilson 103.5, Bethel 47, Campbellsville 43, and Life 16.
