Nichols leads Tigers throwers at Centre Invite

DANVILLE, Ky. – Gusty wind conditions did not stop the Campbellsville track & field throwers from breaking records today at the Centre College Invitational.

In the story of the day, Stuart Nichols broke his own school record in the men's hammer throw. His toss of 44.81 meters bested his previous mark of 44.36m, set last weekend at Transylvania's Pioneer Invite. He finished third for the Tigers, while Aaron Johnson took seventh with 42.67 meters. Clayton Embry threw a lifetime best 37.07 meters for 13th place.

Campbellsville got a new record in men's discus as well, this one by Johnson. He smashed the old mark, set by Dale Kerr in 2011, by almost a full meter. Johnson's 42.81-meter record-breaker (previously 41.83m) put him in fifth place and qualified him for the NCCAA National Championship in May.

Michael Hunt (35.79m) and Conner Stockton (32.94m) finished in 18th and 29th in the same event. Hunt also placed 14th in men's shot put with a mark at 11.90 meters.

Embry, along with Corbin Harris, also competed in men's javelin throw. He and Harris took 20th and 23rd, respectively.

Lindsey Burd scored points for the Lady Tigers in shot put, throwing 12.18 meters to finish in sixth place. Deja Thompson (10.48m) and Halima Williams (10.28m) threw personal bests. Madison Kaiser, Thompson, and Williams took 16th, 17th, and 19th place, respectively. Williams also finished in 13th for women's discus throw with a mark at 29.47 meters.

Thompson took 13th place in women's hammer throw with a distance of 36.40 meters.

In the women's javelin throw, a 27.59-meter toss by Kaiser was good for seventh place. Burd (27.06m) and Mallory Vest (26.76m) set season bests in the same event, finishing in 10th and 11th places.

The entire team will be back together next weekend as Campbellsville continues its season at the University of the Cumberlands Invite. The meet is scheduled over two days, with throwing events set to start at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, March 8.
