BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Following a pair of Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinal appearances, the Campbellsville University men's and women's tennis teams have seven total members on the All-MSC Teams with the women having five individuals selected and the men having two.
For the Lady Tigers,
Brenda Aguilar,
Itzel Hernandez,
Angela Mendoza, and
Rebeca Scurt earned spots on the All-MSC Second Team as
Madison Hill was selected All-MSC Honorable Mention. For the Tigers, the pair that received the season honor were freshman
Raul Safont (First Team) and sophomore
Matus Sevcik (Honorable Mention).
Aguilar was the experienced leader of the Lady Tigers in 2020-21 as the only roster member over junior status as she finished the regular season with an 8-6 singles record and a 12-4 record in doubles play. Aguilar's singles success came mainly from the No. 2 position as she went 7-3 there compared to 1-3 as the No. 1.
Hernandez finished the 2020-21 regular season with a 3-9 singles record and a 4-6 doubles record as she was the individual for the Lady Tigers with the most matches played in the No. 1 singles position.
Mendoza only lost two matches in singles play all year at a 12-2 record on the season, going 9-1 in Mid-South Conference matches. Playing the bulk of her matches at No. 3 to an 8-2 record in that position, Mendoza also went 2-0 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots this season. In doubles play, Mendoza only lost once to an 11-1 record, playing mostly out of the No. 3 spot.
Scurt tied for the team lead with 15 singles wins to a 15-2 record as the primary No. 4 singles player to her 8-1 record from that position. Scurt also picked up wins as No. 1 (1-0), No. 2 (2-1), and No. 3 (4-0) on the season. In doubles action, she went 12-4 with a variety of partners as her highest number of matches came from the No. 2 position.
Hill led Campbellsville in both singles wins (15) and doubles wins (13) playing a lot of her singles matches from the No. 5 position to a 9-1 record there. In doubles play, Hill teamed up with Aguilar for nine of her 13 wins to combined for her 13-4 record with six wins coming at No. 1 doubles and seven wins coming at No. 2 doubles.
In Safont's first season at Campbellsville, he led CU from the No. 1 singles position to a 12-4 record with all of his matches coming at the top of the lineup. In doubles action, Safont shared the court four different partners to a 13-5 record, the most wins of any Tiger in doubles play, splitting time at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles mainly.
Sevcik was the primary No. 2 singles player behind Safont as the sophomore from Slovakia went 9-6 in singles action while posting a 4-9 record in doubles play either at the No. 1 or No. 2 doubles position.
Both men's and women's tennis teams await to see if they will be selected for at-large bids into the NAIA Championships, that are scheduled to begin on May 18 in Mobile, Ala.
