CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers came into the Lou Cunningham Classic fresh off of a 70-50 win against rival Lindsey Wilson College. Their first opponent, the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons, was no match for the balanced Campbellsville scoring attack as the Tigers cruised to a 48-point blowout victory.
The first half began with both teams getting it going early and trading buckets with each other, with the score even at sevens in the first five minutes of the half. With 10 minutes gone in, the Tigers began to pull ahead, going up by double digits against the Dragons. They soon started not to look back as the Tigers quickly shot out on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, going up 35-12. The Tigers continued their dominance through the rest of the half as they increased their lead to 25, up 46-21.
The Tigers played an all-around first half shooting 16 of 33 from the field (48.5%). On the defensive side, they held the Dragons to just eight made shots out of 40 attempts. Campbellsville was also ending the Dragons' possessions, chalking up 25 defensive rebounds. Jarius Key and Chandler Clements finished the half with seven apiece, leading the Tigers in scoring for the half.
The second half continued with the Tigers quickly collecting a 14-4 run and going up 60-25 against the Dragons. Halfway through the second half, Campbellsville sustained their offensive onslaught with a 33-point lead over the Dragons to the score of 79-46. The Tigers hit 101 points with five minutes left to go in the game in an all-out affair by the Tigers. Campbellsville rolled to a well-earned victory against the Virginia University of Lynchburg. The Tigers finished the game garnering a massive 112-64 win over the Dragons.
The Tigers finished the game with six players in double digits. Leading Campbellsville in scoring were Jay Milburn and Clements, who both wrapped the game up with 16 points. Milburn also landed a double-double gobbling up 14 boards on the night. Just behind the leading duo was Malachi De Sousa with 15 points, Javaughn Smith with 13 points, and Jordan Graham and Key posted 11 points each. The Tigers shot 42 of 75 from the field (57.3%) and 12 of 26 from behind the arc (46.2%). Defensively, Campbellsville got it done: eight steals and four blocks with a healthy dose of 39 defensive rebounds. The significant statistic for the game was how the Tigers nearly quadrupled the Dragons in total assists (34-9). Campbellsville played cohesively, finding the open man consistently all game long and passing up good shots for better ones.
The Tigers will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in Saint Louis to conclude the Lou Cunningham Classic. Streaming services will be available for the game 15 minutes before tip-off at campbellsvilletigers.com.
