LOUISVILLE, KY – Campbellsville fought until the end of the meet and placed second by a mere 5.5 points behind the University of the Cumberlands at the Mid-South Conference Indoor Championships on Friday.
Early in the meet, Campbellsville had the points going for them. In the 60m the team had three athletes finish in a row.
Alexia Boyd placed 4th overall in 7.69,
Jamila Garba was behind Boyd in 5th with her time of 7.75, and
Alexia Schofield placed 6th overall in 7.83. The trio stacked up the points in the 200m, collecting 19 team points. Schofield led the way, placing 2nd overall in 25.07. Garba was close behind earning the bronze medal in 25.22, Boyd was 5th in 25.73, and
Kourtlyn Cannon rounded out scoring in the event for the team in 8th at 26.24.
Ten points came out of the 60m hurdles for the team this evening.
Makiyah Allen narrowly missed the bronze medal with her finals time of 9.42, Cannon was 6th overall in 10.90, and
Ariana Simmons placed 7th on the day in 12.13. Garba found the podium once again in the 400m. Garba dipped under the one-minute mark in the race with her time of 59.11, placing 2nd with
Victoria Young coming in for the bronze medal in 59.54.
Young won the first conference title of her career, breaking her own school and hitting an NAIA B Standard in the 600m run in a time of 1:37.03. Eight more distance points came from the 1,000m run.
Meredith Wilson led the way for Campbellsville with a 5th place performance of 3:18.66,
Marlena Sipes was 6th in 3:19.30, and
Taylor Morgan found the final point in 8th of 3:27.17.
Christy Shank set her own school record in the one-mile run and earned the first individual conference title of her career. Shank crossed the line in 5:11.49, dipping over five seconds under her previous best. Shank picked up her second conference title of the day in the 3,000m run. Shank won the event in an impressive NAIA B Standard time of 10:21.22 and a new school record. Sister
Hailey Shank was 4th overall in 10:35.58, and
Emma Steff earned three points in 6th in a time of 10:52.60.
Hailey set a meet record, school record, personal record, and NAIA A Standard in the 5,000m run. She earned the first individual conference title of her career in the event in a time of 18:03.95, while her previous best was a near 30 seconds behind her. Steff earned the bronze medal in 18:19.84, while
Nina Daman gave the Tigers two points in 7th in a PR of 19:15.96.
Sipes and Morgan rounded out the individual distance scoring events in the 3,000m racewalk. Sipes was 6th in 20:24.85, and Morgan was 7th in 20:25.59.
In the relays, the distance medley relay set a school record in the event by 16 seconds. C. Shank, H. Shank, Steff, and
KaNiya Douglas won the event in a meet-record time of 12:39.06, 15 seconds ahead of their competition. The 4x800m relay brought the Tigers five points on the day. Wilson, Sipes, Morgan, and
Anna Claire Carwile were able to complete the relay in 10:26.63. The final relay of the day was the 4x400 relay where Campbellsvile dominated from the gun. Young, Garba, Douglas, and Schofield ran a school record time of 4:00.17, six-second ahead of the nearest team.
Schofield made herself known on the track, she made a bigger statement in the field. She earned runner-up in the high jump with a height of 1.49m. In the long jump, she placed 4th overall with her mark of 5.26m. In her primary event of the triple jump, she was .03 off a PR and school record with her winning jump of 11.91m.
Boyd finished ahead of Schofield in the long jump of 5.50m earning the bronze medal and .01 off her previous best in the event, and she finished 4th in the triple jump in 11.22m. Cannon was 7th in the long jump, with her mark at 4.71m.
The throws were highlighted by
Ricquel Williams, who won the first conference title of her career in the weight throw. Williams best throw came on her final attempt of the day at 15.58m. She earned runner-up in the shot put on her third throw of the afternoon, hitting a mark of 12.33m.
Schofield was named the Mid-South Conference Athlete of the Meet by scoring the most points in the meet. Assistant Coach
Anthony Thompson was named Assistant Coach of the Year for the indoor season.
Campbellsville will now have the athletes who qualified prepare for the NAIA Indoor National Track & Field Championships on March 2-4.
