Young wins back-to-back indoor 600m titles, Campbellsville places 3rd at MSC Indoor Championships

LOUISVILLE, KY – Campbellsville places 3rd at the Mid-South Conference Indoor Championships behind Victoria Young's 600m title.

Young won her second 600m conference title of her career Friday afternoon. Last season, she won with a time of 1:37.07; this season, she was able to hit NAIA B Standard in the event of 1:37.16, which was 2.01 seconds ahead of her competition. 

Hailey Shank was the second athlete to hit a national cut on Friday. Shank hit NAIA A Standard, a school record, and a PR of 17:55.09, placing 5th overall in the event. Shank set her second school record of the day in the 800m run. She ran a time of 2:20.96, 2.95 seconds faster than her previous record, while earning the bronze medal. Her final school record of the day came from the 1,000m run. She ran a PR of 3:05.60, placing 3rd overall.

Alexia Boyd and Jaci Johnson gave Campbellsville five points from the 60m finals. Boyd placed 5th overall in 7.76, while Johnson was 8th at 8.02. Johnson and Jamila Garba grabbed the Tigers five more points from the 200m. Garba finished 5th overall in 25.37, with Johnson finishing 8th in 26.14. 

KaNiya Douglas led the way for Campbellsville in the 400m. Douglas finished 4th overall in 58.82. Piper Clark and Young grabbed the final three points in the event. Clark was 7th in the race at 59.92, while Young made it under the one-minute mark by .01 with a time of 59.99, placing 8th overall. Following Young's title in the 600m, Meredith Wilson earned one point in the event, placing 7th overall in 1:53.46.

Emma Steff earned her first points of the afternoon in the mile run. Steff was 6th in the race with a season-best of 5:40.29. Cailyn Godsey brought in two points from her performance in the 3,000m racewalk. Godsey placed 7th in 21:08.89. Makiyah Allen and Ariana Simmons produced 11 points in the 60m hurdles. Allen was the runner-up, earning the silver medal in 9.04, while Simmons was 6th in 11.83.

The 4x400m relay team crossed the line in the silver medal position, with Johnson, Clark, Young, and Douglas running 3:58.64. The team has already secured their spot in the national championship in two weeks with a 3:56.88 performance earlier this season. 

Staff, Madison Welch, Anna Claire Carwile, and Wilson missed a top-three spot on the podium in the 4x800m relay. The relay was 4th overall in 11:11.69. The final relay of the day was the distance medley relay for Campbellsville. Steff, Welch, Carwile, and Brianna Collins finished the event in 14:51.29, placing 4th overall. 

TaMya Davis tied her season best in the high jump, placing 4th overall at 1.50m. Simmons set her PR in the pole vault with a height of 2.27m, which was cleared on her first attempt at the height. Davis and Dasia Garland collected eight points in the long jump for Campbellsville. Davis was 4th in the event with a mark of 5.16m, only .04 off the bronze medal. Garland finished 6th with a distance of 4.66m. Garland produced a bronze medal finish from the triple jump with a mark of 10.83m on her final attempt of the afternoon. 

In the throws, Layla Taylor and Kayla Barr finished 7th and 8th in the shot put. Taylor was 7th with her throw of 9.66m, and Barr was 8th at 9.54m. Barr was the lone scorer in the weight throw. Her best throw of the day came on her third attempt with a mark at 12.29m.

As a team, the Tigers finished 3rd with 111 team points. The University of the Cumberlands won the meet with 297.5 points. 

Campbellsville will now prepare for the NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Brookings, S.D. The Tigers will be sending seven athletes across seven events.
