CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers hosted the Cumberland University Phoenix on Thursday night, coming off a clutch conference win over Lindsey Wilson. Despite their double-digit halftime lead, Campbellsville fell to Cumberland, 76-65.
Jay Milburn began the game with a three-pointer from the wing. The Phoenix retaliated in the paint, but Dalton Kramer struck back with another three-point bucket for the Tigers. Campbellsville capitalized off Cumberland's foul-heavy play, collecting points from the charity stripe. The Tigers' shots from beyond the arc remained one of their biggest strengths as the half continued to unfold. Campbellsville reached 21 on the scoreboard before the Phoenix made it to double digits. Halfway through the first half, Cumberland collected a few consecutive steals and possession-ending defensive rebounds, decreasing their deficit in the scoreboard to only nine points. With only five minutes left, Ra Briggs came off the bench with an avid three-point bucket aided by Kam Vick's third assist of the contest. The Phoenix struck with a transition alleyoop, but Cobe Penny's buzzer-beating layup preserved the Tigers' advantage. At the half, Campbellsville led, 39-29.
Coming into the second half, Cumberland's turnovers remained their demise, Campbellsville's steals keeping them in control over the ball. However, with another dunk and a couple of opportunities at the free-throw line, the Phoenix came within a point of the Tigers' upper hand. Keaston Brown attempted to widen the gap on the scoreboard from beyond the arc, his efforts counteracted by Cumberland's shots in the paint. Both teams went back-and-forth tying the score and stealing the lead in the next couple of minutes of the game, neither able to hold on to the advantage for long before the other caught up. The Phoenix got ahead boosting their offensive attacks, collecting layups and three-pointers to build their advantage to ten points over the Tigers. Halfway through the half, the Phoenix's defense brought Campbellsville's scoring opportunities to a halt. Brown and Kramer attempted to connect, but struggled to score before Cumberland could regain their newfound dominance on the court. Marcellus Vail brought the Tigers within two points from the Phoenix's upper hand with his second three-point bucket. Both teams exchanged layups and free-throws, seeking the victory as the final minutes of the game approached. The Tigers were unable to grasp the lead, falling to Cumberland, 76-65.
The Tigers will be back in action traveling to Midway, Kentucky on Monday, January 20th to battle the Midway University Eagles, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
