Campbellsville University improved to 3-0 on the year Thursday in Gosser Gym, as the second-ranked Tigers ran away with a 31-13 win over No. 5 Cumberland University in the first Mid-South Conference duel of the season.
In the only Top 5 individual match of the night, fifth-ranked Noah Hunt took advantage of an early penalty point to beat No. 3 Johnny Papesh and give Cumberland an early 3-0 match lead.
CU responded at 133 with an upset win by Tyler Alsip. Alsip was trailing 5-0 as he entered the third period in a neutral position with Cumberland's Joshua Chappa. After getting a takedown to score the first Tiger points in the match, he collected three near fall points to even the score with 1:20 left in the match. He rode out the period with three more near fall points as the Tiger fans erupted in cheer under the Gosser Gym spotlight. With riding time, Alsip collected the Tigers' first win in a 9-5 decision.
"That guy (Chappa) is a pinner, and they were probably expecting a pin, but Tyler really wrestled well. He just fought through it and got a big win in his first conference duel for us," CU head coach Franky James said. "Overall, I wanted to see how our team would respond to a Top 5 team coming in here. They handled the pressure pretty well."
Second-ranked Tommy Pretty followed with a pin in 1:43 at 141 pounds against Ryan McKenzie, who was wrestling in place of top-ranked Mikey Davis. CU stretched its lead with a major decision and tech fall at the next two weights to extend its lead to 18-3 midway through the duel.
Bulldog freshman Zeke Hunt cut the score in half as he took down Tiger sophomore Nick Waldrop (0-1) in the second period with a pin at 4:32. Waldrop was making his season debut.
Josh Ashbrook (2-0) helped the Tigers distance their lead at 184 pounds with a second round pin of Cumberland freshman Scott Stewart. Ashbrook was en route to at least a major decision, 11-1, before he pinned back Stewart's left shoulder at 4:58. The fall put Campbellsville one point away from victory, extending the team score to 24-13 in favor of the Tigers.
Former All-American Spencer Adams secured Campbellsville's win with a 16-4 major decision at 197 pounds to give the Tigers a 28-13 advantage. Chris Daniels closed out the match with a decision.
Campbellsville (3-0) will host a tri-meet Friday, Nov. 12 with No. 17 University of the Cumberlands and Lindsey Wilson College.
