No. 2 Tiger grapplers dominate in opener

Sure, there were a few forfeits by the other team, but second-ranked Campbellsville University opened the 2010-11 season in dominating fashion at Gosser Gymnasium, winning by scores of 56-0 and 48-0 Friday.

The Tiger wrestling team opened its season at home for the first time since 2007 by hosting Central Baptist College and Ohio Valley University in a tri-match.

"I thought it was a good start. No matther who we wrestle, we were able to do some things tonight we've been working on," CU head coach Franky James said. "We usually start with a really tough tournament or (NCCAA) Division I duel, but with this team, I wanted to try something different."

The two visiting schools started the night in a fully lit Gosser Gym. Central Baptist, a first-year program, held off Ohio Valley for its first program win, 33-24.

Following the match, Campbellsville beat CBC, 56-0, in the Tigers' first spotlight duel of the season.

Campbellsville collected pins in its first six weight class matches and also picked up two forfeits to take a 48-0 lead with two weight classes remaining. All six pins came in the first period, but three came in less than a minute and a half. Johnny Papesh, a 2009 All-American, opened the season for CU with a pin in only 1:15 at 125 pounds. Three-time All-American David Clemens made his return after a year off to win his first match with a pin in 1:16 at 174 pounds. But the quickest pin of the night came at 165 pounds, as Conor Young took down his opponent in 1:14 to make the score 36-0 and clinch the win for CU.

"I was concerned about Conor wrestling tonight, because he's been a little banged up, but he wrestled well," James said.

CU closed the night with a duel against Ohio Valley, winning 48-0.

With forfeits by OVU at the first three weight classes, Matt Milton started the duel with a 15-0 tech fall in a time of 3:49 at 149 pounds. After Seth Lucas won by am 11-4 decision, Young collected his second pin of the season in a time of 4:34. Clemens picked up his second win of the season with a tech fall, 11-3, to push the Tigers' lead to 36-0 and clinch CU's second win of the season. Josh Ashbrook and Chris Daniels closed the match with decisions at 184 pounds and heavyweight.

Between the two Tiger matches, there were heavyweight exhibitions between Campbellsville and CBC. Campbellsville freshman Jordan Marero pinned Derek McCain in the first exhibition in only 30 seconds, while Dane Cullen also recorded a pin in his exhibition, beating Jared Plaster of CBC in 1:55.

Campbellsville (2-0) will host No. 5 Cumberland University in its Mid-South Conference opener Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
