CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Nothing comes easy in the Mid-South Conference, but it seemed to tonight for the Lady Tigers.
After beating four non-conference opponents by an average margin of 43 points each, the Lady Tigers tangled with Bluefield College tonight in the first MSC matchup for both teams, beating the Lady Rams 88-55 — a 33-point spread.
"If you'd told me that was going to be the (score) difference tonight, I wouldn't have believed you," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "We started out hot and were really active on defense and that helped us quite a bit."
CU (5-0, 1-0) built on its 37-23 half-time margin to lead by as many as 36 in the second half. An Angie Lawrence 3 with three minutes to go gave CU a 36-point margin late in the game.
Mary Jehlik and Katie Allen scored five points apiece during a 20-0 first-half run and ran CU out to a 22-2 lead with 12:46 remaining in the first half.
Jehlik was a beast turning in a stat line of 19 points, six rebounds, three steals.
"Having Mary and Ellen (Sholtes) in our zone is a difference maker for us. They are so long," continued Colvin.
The Lady Tigers went on a couple of scoreless droughts in the first half and allowed Bluefield (3-2, 0-1) some hope. But the win moves the Lady Tigers to 4-0 all-time against the Lady Rams.
Lindsey Burd hit a bucket at the 6:20 mark that ended five minutes of scoreless basketball and Sholtes did the same with two free throws.
Jehlik hit a basket and then immediately stole the ball at mid-court and turned it into a quick four points for a 32-13 first-half lead.
CU held Bluefield's 25-points-per-game scorer, Teqa McNeal, to seven points.
"She is an amazing player. We hounded her as much as we could and she never got flustered or lost her composure," said Colvin. "I think they're a good team, much better than it showed tonight. They'll cause some problems for teams throughout the season."
Campbellsville was 6-for-11 from 3 in the second half and ended the game with eight from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers held Bluefield to 34 percent shooting and turned them over 24 times, 18 in the first half.
Sholtes and Lawrence joined Jehlik in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Lindsey Burd nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
The Lady Tigers remain at home on Saturday when they host The University of Pikeville. Tipoff at 2:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (WLCU 88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
