CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Day one of the 2013 home baseball scheduled resulted in a split for Campbellsville University, as the Tigers knocked off No. 14 Missouri Baptist University before fall, 3-1, to Indiana University Southeast at HIG Field.

CU (2-1) will return to action Friday, Feb. 15, against MBU again. The game will be played at 2 p.m. EST at Lindsey Wilson College's Egnew Field in Columbia, Ky. Sunday's games against Siena Heights University have been canceled.

"Overall, it was a very good day. We got to play a lot of different people. We're working on things and moving people around. I think we're just going to get better," said Beauford Sanders, CU baseball head coach. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow. It will be another big challenge with Missouri Baptist."

Tylar Schmunk (1-0), a redshirt junior transfer from Northeastern Junior College, recorded a win in his first collegiate start in 22 months. After sitting out last season at CU, Schmunk made a brief appearance on the road Tuesday before gaining the start in CU's home opener.

He struck out four through four innings in his first win as a Tiger, while allowing one unearned run off three hits and three walks.

"It's been two years since Schmunk pitched, and he did a good job," Sanders said.

Aaron Schwoebel put the Tigers on the board in the third inning with a leadoff single through the hole at second and took second on an error by the catcher. Tanner Nielsen singled to right and kept Missouri Baptist in a run-down between first and second to allow Schwoebel to score. Patrick McMeel later singled in Nielsen, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Schmunk walked Joseph Taylor and Ryan Gunhouse to start the fourth inning, but managed to work out of the jam, giving up only one unearned run. After stealing third, Taylor scored on an error at third by Josh Potter. Schmunk then got a 4-6-3 double play to get out the inning and kept Gunhouse from tying the game.

Allen Hewey worked two perfect innings of relief pitching in the fifth and sixth innings and allowed one hit in the seventh en route to his first save as a CU Tiger.

Campbellsville added two insurance runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Phillips started the rally with a pinch-hit single. He swiped second on his first opportunity, and scored on a dropped pop-up behind second base. Michael Bush, who reached on the error, also scored on a double by Johnson to stretch CU's lead to 4-1.

Brandon Johnson led CU with a 2-for-3 game at the plate and was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader.

Mike Avila took the loss for MBU, allowing two earned runs off four hits in four innings of work.

Indiana University Southeast wasted little time to score its first run of the 2013 season. The Grenadiers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Mitchell Mattingly was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out double by Sam Burke.

The Tigers worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but left them juiced after a ground out by Angelo Simmons ended the inning.

Mychal Harris responded with a leadoff single in the third and moved into scoring position with a bunt single by Marcus Howard. Harris scored on a RBI ground ball to second by Frank Pluskota, but Pluskota reached safely with an error. Sean Bouthilette worked out of the jam in his first start of the season, but he went on to exit the game after the third inning, trailing 2-0.

IUS added another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Harris to score courtesy runner Josh Wenning.

The Tigers were held to only two hits in the first four innings before Simmons led off the fifth with a base hit. He later scored the Tigers' lone run on a single down the third base line by Carlos Tores. The Tigers stranded two runners in the fifth and one more in the sixth as their rally effort fell short.

"We didn't get the outcome in the second game. I think a lot of that was our approaches at the plate for the first half of the game, we weren't patient enough. We capped a few balls and were out front a lot, just being anxious," Sanders said. "The effort was there. We had the bases loaded and had a runner at second with three and four (holes) up at times. We were in position to score runs, and that's good. Even though we were having more poor at bats in the second game, we found a way to put ourselves in position."

Bouthilette (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs off four hits in three innings. It was his first appearance since 2011 after having surgery last season.

"It was great to see Bouthilette to be able to come back from his injury and be able to throw without any pain," Sanders said.

Jeff Larabee threw the fourth inning for CU, giving up a run on two hits. McMeel shut down the Grenadiers in the final three frames, striking out six of the nine batters he faced. He did not allow a hit or walk and threw only 39 pitches.

From the plate, Michael Bush led CU with a  2-for-3 performance in the game.

Lucas Harry went four and a third for IUS to record the win, while Joe Harness received the save.
