CU baseball collects pair of 5-4 wins over Georgetown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University baseball continues to be on a roll. The Tigers (16-4, 5-0 MSC) extended its win streak to eight games Friday, March 15 at home with a pair of 5-4 wins over Mid-South Conference rival Georgetown College, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Friday's doubleheader matchup marked the official home opener for CU in MSC play this season. Game one was a nine-inning game, while game two was just seven. Both were played on campus at Houchens Insurance Group Field.

Right-handed senior pitcher, Patrick McMeel was the man on the mound for CU in game one. McMeel threw seven innings, giving up five hits and striking out nine. He was eventually named the winning pitcher of game one before being relieved by Tylar Schmunk, Jacob Phillips and ultimately Allen Hewey, who was credited with the save.

The CU Tigers found themselves down, 2-0, after Georgetown put up lone runs in both the first and third innings. But CU was able to capitalize on fielding miscues and plate a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, closing the gap on Georgetown's lead, 2-1. Aaron Schwoebel reached base on a fielding error, and scored the same way.

The score remained the same after 4 ½ innings.

Schwoebel's run seemed to have calmed the nerves of Campbellsville players, because the Tigers blew the game wide-open in the bottom of the fifth. CU was able to push three unearned runs across the board in what turned into a four-run inning for the Tigers. Travis Hayes reached base after swinging on strike three in the dirt, but Georgetown did not get the out at first base. Tanner Neilson followed with a single up the middle, advancing Hayes to third.

Mike Bush drew a one-out walk to load the bases, and then Josh Potter reached first base on an error that scored Hayes and Neilson, giving CU its first lead of the game, 3-2. Bush scored on a sacrifice fly, hit to shallow left field, to go up 4-2. Potter eventually scored on a double-steal home, CU 5-2.

Georgetown plated lone runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but CU was able to hold on to their 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth when catcher Keaton Neeb blocked the plate on what would have been the tying run for Georgetown with the bases loaded. Neeb's play at the plate gave CU its second out in the inning, alongside a massive momentum shift in favor of Campbellsville. Hewey struck out the last Georgetown batter for the victory.

The Tigers looked to Bret DeRooy to lead them in the latter part of Friday's double header. DeRooy threw 5 2/3 innings, getting the win and striking out five batters. Game two started out eerily similar to the first game of the doubleheader; with Georgetown taking a 2-0 lead over Campbellsville. This time though, the runs came in the third inning.

But Campbellsville was able to answer with two of its own in the third as well. Travis Hayes and Tanner Scott both scored on unearned runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 2-2. Hayes walked and scored on an RBI from Potter. Scott reached first on a fielder's choice and scored when Neeb walked with bases loaded.

CU continued the two-run offense in the next inning too, taking a 4-2 lead over Georgetown. McMeel and Neilson both reached base on singles. McMeel scored on Neilson's batted ball, and Neilson scored on an RBI single from Potter, CU 4-2.

Georgetown managed to make one final push towards victory in game two in the top of the sixth inning. Putting up two more runs, the visiting Tigers were able to tie the game, 4-4, heading into the bottom half of the inning.

A single in the bottom of the sixth from Scott gave CU the base runner it was looking for. Scott advanced to second base on a Georgetown shortstop throwing error, and reached third on a steal. With two outs in the inning, Potter singled past the Georgetown second baseman, scoring Scott from third, on the eventual game-winning RBI.

Hewey recorded his second save of the day in game two, after relieving Drew Pettit, who got the win for closing out the sixth.

Campbellsville will look to complete the series sweep over Georgetown on Saturday, as it hosts the visiting Tigers for a nine-inning game, scheduled to start at noon EDT.
