Owen, Kimberland hot in Lady Tigers' 90-73 win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Caroline Owen scored 12 of Campbellsville's final 19 first-half points and the Lady Tigers used the momentum to down Lindenwood-Belleville, 90-73, today in Powell Athletic Center.

The pesky Lindenwood squad would not go away early and led 24-23 with eight minutes remaining in the half. But that's when Owen went to work.

Owen, a junior from Carthage, Tenn., dropped in her second 3 of the half to give CU (18-2, 8-1) a lead they would never relinquish. Owen hit a layup while being fouled, missed her free throw, but canned two more 3s and a free throw down the stretch to put Campbellsville in the driver's seat.

Mary Jehlik scored CU's final four points of the half on a bucket and two free tosses for the eventual 47-37 lead at intermission.

Lindenwood (15-8) used five 3s in the first half, two by Jett Bouckaert, to keep the Lady Lynx in the lead for the first 12 minutes of the game.

"We left them open way too much and they shot it really good," said coach Ginger Colvin. "They run a motion offense and their best ball-handler is one of their bigger players. It created match-up problems for our smaller guards."

Leading by 10, Campbellsville leaned on Daizah Kimberland. Kimberland hit four straight jumpers, and scored all 10 of her points after intermission.

"They played off her," analyzed Colvin. "At halftime I told her if they left her open 70 times to take 70 shots. Daizah has a really nice mid-range game."

Lindenwood's Diamond Burt (13) and CU's Owen (15) had double figure points after the first 20 minutes of play. Both ended up leading their teams with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

Four minutes into the second half a Lindsey Burd layup for a 61-47 lead forced a Lindenwood timeout. But the break didn't do much good at stopping CU. Kristen Jacob's lay-in gave the Lady Tigers a 20-point lead and gave Colvin an opportunity to play some reserves.

Lindenwood outshot Campbellsville from the field 55 percent to 48 percent. But the Lady Tigers forced 28 turnovers and held a commanding 42-22 advantage off the glass.

"We rebounded it a lot better today," said Colvin.

Owen and Kimberland were joined in double figures by Ellen Sholtes' 14. Kimberland led all rebounders with eight. LeeAnn Grider had seven assists and Katie Allen had six. Kimberland and Owen had four steals apiece.

The Lady Tigers open the second half of their conference schedule on Thursday when they host Lindsey Wilson College at 6:00. The game will be broadcast over university radio (WLCU 88.7). A link for listening on the computer can be found at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
