Campbellsville University wrestling dropped its first duel of the season Friday in the second of two matches in Lebanon, Ill. The second-ranked Tigers beat No. 18 Missouri Baptist, 21-15, but were knocked off by No. 4 McKendree, 20-15 in the nightcap. It's the third straight loss for CU to McKendree in the past three seasons.
Tommy Pretty recorded a pair of wins to remain unbeaten on the season as the second-ranked NAIA wrestler at 141 pounds. However, 133-pounder
Tyler Alsip (5-1) dropped his first match of the year, 4-3, to Anton Prater of Missouri Baptist. Alsip scored an escape in second period to take an early lead on Prater, ranked second in the NAIA, however Prater chose down to start the third period and evened the match with an escape. While Alsip regained his lead with a takedown, Prater avoided an upset in his first match of the season with an escape and takedown to win the match.
Conor Young recorded the only pin in the two matches, defeating MBU's Jacob Waterkotte by fall in 2:38.
Campbellsville led the match against McKendree early with the Bearcats forfeiting at 125 pounds. For the first time in a duel this season, Alsip did not wrestle, as
Daphilo Success took on top-ranked 133-pound Bearcat Wade Lowe. Lowe won by major decision to pull McKendree within two team points, 6-4. Pretty took care of fourth-ranked Kyle Williams at 141 pounds to maintain CU's lead. Entering the last three matches, Campbellsville held a 15-11 lead and really needed only one decision to work toward securing the match.
Allen Scruggs wrestled his first duel of the season at 184 pounds, but lost a Top 10 battle with ninth-ranked Tanner Wolk, 7-2.
Spencer Adams, ranked third at 197 pounds, was knocked off for the second time this season, but this time it was seventh-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds preseason, Kyle Reid. Reid had four take downs in the match, while Adam's points all came off escape points. At 285 pounds,
Chris Daniels lost the heavyweight bought against Andrew Sanchez at McKendree, 7-4. Sanchez scored two escapes in the third period and had a riding timem point.
CU (5-1) will return to action Dec. 4 at the Ohio Northern University Invitational.
