Mat Tigers ride Pretty, Thurston to 4th place finish in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Campbellsville needed to make up eight points on Sunday to move out of  fifth place in the Midwest Wrestling Classic, and thanks to the performances of Tommy Pretty and Tim Thurston the Tigers did just that.

The Tigers could not overtake Pembroke, N.C., but finished with 97 points over two days of wrestling and leap-frogged former third place holder, Ashland College, by 6 1/2 points in a 21-team field.

Newberry College won the Classic with 152 points, followed by Upper Iowa, 128; and North Carolina-Pembroke, 102.5.

Thurston, of High Point, N.C. and a junior transfer, defeated the NCAA Division II's No. 1-ranked 133-pounder in Kyle Pedretti of Upper Iowa by a major decision. Additionally, Thurston won the Michael Horton Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Pretty, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, won the 141-pound class by taking down Deral Brown of Newberry College.

Thurston won three straight matches after drawing a bye from his third-seed draw position to reach the finals of the championship bracket. He beat Jordan Duckett, Tiffin University, 15-6; and Scott Meyer, Ashland College, 12-2 ,to earn his his spot opposite Pedretti.

Pretty, the No. 1 seed in his class, ripped through Jonathan Hoopes, Ohio Northern, 7-2; and Kyle Kanaga, Ashland College; to earn his mat time opposite Brown.

Johnny Papesh won fifth place in the 125-pound class after being dumped into the consolation bracket by Indianapolis' Alex Johns (7-5). Papesh had won his first match 9-4 over Ohio Northern's Jerome Pasquale. In the consolation, Papesh beat Brandon Harvey of Trine University, and John McDonald of Newberry to earn his spot opposite Johns.

Spencer Adams was beaten by Newberry's John Reed for fifth place in the 197-pound class after being kicked out of the championship bracket by Pembroke's Shane Nolan. He beat Josh Spreewell of Limestone in his first match and then worked his way past Tyler Hasenbank, Newman, 10-6 and King's Charles Morgan.

Conor Young took eighth place in the 157-pound class. He won his first match over Limestone's Jeremy McPherson, but then lost to Sean Byrnes, Limestone, in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Young beat Chris Foy of Pembroke 16-0. He was bumped into the seventh-place match by Upper Iowa's Winston Robbins, 18-2.

At 174 pounds, Josh Ashbrook won seventh. He won a first-round and lost a second-round match. Then in the consolation bracket he defeated Jake Holler, Indianapolis; and lost to Wade Gobin of Upper Iowa forcing him into the seventh-place match against Bryce Sepko.

Other wrestlers from CU participating, included:

149 Pounds: Matt Milton lost his first-round match 9-2 to Limestone's Theran Goodale and won a match against Blake Hilmer of Upper Iowa 10-4 in the consolation bracket. He was eliminated by West Liberty University's Brian Legett 9-2.

165 Pounds: Nick Waldrop was dropped into the consolation bracket with a fall in the first-round to Pembroke's Mike Williams. Waldrop beat West Liberty's Andy Church in a fall before being eliminated from competition by Trine University's Ryan Pieper.

184 Pounds: Allen Scruggs won his first match, a 5-4 decision over Brandon Tressler of King College before being dropped into the consolation bracket by Casey Bradley (5-3) of Limestone. Jason Alber of Trine took Scruggs out of competition with a 2-1 win.

285 Pounds: Chris Daniels lost his first match 15-0 to second-seeded Jacob Southwick, Ashland College. In the consolation bracket, Daniels beat Charles Weber of Limestone before losing to Dondricus Anderson of King College.
