No. 4 CU falls short in upset bid of No. 1 Notre Dame

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Two of Campbellsville University's top wrestlers were knocked off Saturday as the fourth-ranked Tigers were unable to upset top-ranked Notre Dame College in Gosser Gym. The defending champs survived for a 20-13 win.

The Tigers took an early 7-0 lead after a decision by Johnny Papesh and major decision win by Tim Thurston. However, Tommy Pretty (20-1) dropped his first 141-pound decision of the season, 6-5, to fifth-ranked Brent Freeman. The upset sparked a 13-0 run for Notre Dame, including an upset win by Kevin Hardy over No. 4 David Clemens at 165 pounds.

Trailing by six team points, 13-7, Campbellsville was in need of a few upsets late to have a chance. Josh Ashbrook brought the crowd to its feet as he delivered an overtime blow at 174 pounds. Ashbrook scored a takedown as time expired in the third overtime period to knock off eighth-ranked Cozy Butzer, 3-2.

Now trailing by three, Allen Scruggs displayed possibly his most important win of the season at 184 pounds, as the Georgia native knocked off eighth-ranked Alex Deman with a 4-3 decision. Scruggs took down Deman early in the third period and held on despite a Denman escape in the final seconds.

Tied 13-13 with two weights remaining, Campbellsville was unable to complete its upset bid over the national champs, as Derek Foore remained unbeaten on the year at 197 with a 11-2 major decision over Campbellsville's Spencer Adams. The win gave Notre Dame heavyweight Orlando Scales a four-point team cushion entering the final match. Scales sealed the dual with a win over Chris Daniels, 6-0.

Earlier in the day, Notre Dame defeated No. 17 Lindsey Wilson College, 32-6 in Gosser Gym.

Campbellsville concludes its regular season with a 12-4 duals record. CU and Lindsey Wilson travel to Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., on Feb. 12 for the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Both teams will face Notre Dame again in tournament action, Feb. 19 at the NAIA East Region Qualifier in St. Charles, Mo.
