CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Two down, two to go. Campbellsville University wrestling moved into the semifinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday after beating Montana State University-Northern and knocking off No. 3 Grand View University.
The Tigers started the day at the University of Northern Iowa with a 24-10 win over Montana State-Northern and went on to hold off Grand View, 18-9 in the quarterfinals.
CU senior Spencer Adams helped wrap up both wins at 197 pounds as he took down MSN's Kody Reed with an 11-3 major decision to put out the Lights. Against Grand View, Adams scored all of his points in the second round to win a dual-clinching decision over Derek Nightser, 4-1.
Other Tigers picking up two wins in the national event were Tommy Pretty (14-0), who did shutout both of his opponents at 141 pounds, and Conor Young at 157 pounds.
Campbellsville took an early 14-0 lead against Montana State-Northern en route to its 14-point win. After Johnny Papesh won by forfeit for the Tigers at 125 pounds, Tim Thurston and Pretty each scored major decisions at 133 and 141, respectively. Young eased his way to a decision at 157 pounds to stretch CU's lead to 17-3, but the Tigers' tightest win came at 165 pounds. Nick Waldrop scored three near fall points in the second period at 165 to build a 5-1 advantage and held on for his first dual win of the season, 5-4, over Jared Miller. CU held a 10-point lead before Adams sealed the win.
In the quarterfinal dual, Campbellsville once again started off strong with a 15-0 lead. However, third-ranked Grand View nearly pulled even late. Entering the 197-pound match, the Vikings were two decisions away from tying the Tigers. However, Adams' win put the dual out of reach entering the heavyweight bought, which went to Grand View's Tyler Wilson, 2-1.
Campbellsville will return to the mats Sunday at noon EST to take on Lindenwood University in the National Duals semifinal. Lindenwood edged No. 2 McKendree University, 16-12, Saturday afternoon to advance to the semifinal. On the other side of the bracket, defending national champion Notre Dame College (Ohio) will meet Missouri Valley University. The championship and third-place duals will follow the semifinals at 3 p.m.
