Tigers in position for Top 8 finish at National Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Campbellsville University narrowly lost to top-ranked University of Great Falls, 18-16, in the quarterfinal round Saturday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Cliff Keen NAIA National Duals. The Tigers wrestled back to close the first day and gain position for a Top 8 finish when competition resumes Sunday.

Campellsvile led Great Falls, 13-12, entering the final two weights Saturday afternoon after back-to-back decisions for the Tigers by Josh Ashbrook and Allen Scruggs. The decisive points came at 197 pounds though, as No. 2 Kamron Jackson of Great Falls pinned No. 3 Spencer Adams in 2:17 for six team points and an 18-13 lead. Jamelle Jones closed out the dual with a 6-4 decision at heavyweight to pull within two points, 18-16.

CU responded to the loss to beat Baker University (Kan.) in the second round of consolation, 27-10. The Tigers will meet Missouri Valley in the next consolation round Sunday morning at 10 a.m. EST.

"I'm very happy that we bounced back from a tough loss to Great Falls and wrestled well against Baker. The guys are working out to make weight tonight, because Mo. Valley will be tough in the morning," said CU head coach Franky James. "This has been a good location and nice setup for the national duals."

The Tigers were led by undefeated performances by Conor Young (157), Ashbrook (174), Scruggs (184) and Jones (197/285).

Jones, who was once ranked No. 1 in the NAIA for 197 pounds, made his Tiger debut against Waldorf in the opening round, collecting a pin in 1:16 over Brock Binversie. He went on to record a win at heavyweight against Great Falls and did not compete against Baker.

Scruggs returned from injury to record a 15-0 tech fall in his first match against Waldorf. He closed the day with a pair of two-point wins. Ashbrook had three wins by decision, including a 2-1 overtime win against Baker, and Young won twice by decision and had a 16-0 tech fall against Baker.

Tommy Pretty recorded the only other tech fall on the day for the Tigers, 17-2, over Waldrof's Pat Baruth. Michael Clark recorded the only pin for the Tigers, beating Baker's Nathan Sommer in 5:42 for his first win as a Tiger at 165 pounds.

CU is now 10-4 in duals action as it enters the second day of competition at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
