Tigers sweep Ohio Midwestern, 5-1 and 11-0

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University baseball capped off another doubleheader sweep at home on Thursday, March 14. CU defeated Ohio Mid Western University 5-1 in game one and followed that performance up with an 11-0 shutout in game two.

Freshman, Darrick Brilz Jr. got the starting nod on the mound for CU in game one; his first collegiate start and first collegiate win for the Tigers. Brilz gave up just two hits through five-innings of work, striking out two Rams batters. Ethan Berchet-Hall was called on in the top of the sixth to close out the game for the Tigers.

CU moved three runners across the plate in the bottom of the first, to start the game, after Brilz shut down the side in the top of the inning.

Tanner Neilson started the game off being hit by a pitch, before Michael Bush reached first base via fielder's choice. Bush was moved to second on a Rams wild throw.  Josh Potter, too, was hit by a pitch and Keeton Neeb reached first base on a misplayed groundball by OMWU; scoring Bush and advancing Potter to second. Potter stole third base and Levi McCamish (running for Neeb) stole second, before both were scored on a 2-RBI double by Shayne Kelly through the hole at shortstop, CU 3-0.

After a scoreless second inning, CU put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the third. 5-0. Neeb reached first on a walk before he was again replaced on the base path by McCamish, who stole second. Aaron Schwoebel also walked and Kelly reached on a Rams wild throw; scoring McCamish and advancing Schwoebel to third. Schwoebel scored off a sacrifice fly to right by Brandon Johnson.

The only Rams run of the afternoon came in the top of the seventh. Berchet-Hall hit the leadoff man, who went on to steal both second and third base before he was eventually batted in on a one-out single to shallow centerfield. Berchet-Hall was able to get out of the inning before any major damage was done.

Campbellsville again called on a freshman to lead them from the mound in game two of the doubleheader; this time it was Shane Woodson. Woodson recorded his first collegiate win in five-innings of work, giving up just one hit while striking out six. Dario Bortolotto entered the game in the top of the sixth and finished the game for the Tigers, giving up one hit and striking out three Rams batters.

Offensively, CU set the tone for the entire game in the bottom of the second. Campbellsville pushed six runs across the plate. Carlos Torres led the inning off with a double to deep left-center; McCamish replaced Torres on the bases and advanced to third on a wild throw. Schwoebel reached first base on a walk before Angelo Simmons hit a double of his own into deep left, scoring McCamish and Schwoebel.

Johnson followed up the Simmons double with a single into shallow right field, but advanced to second on a wild throw while play was still live; Simmons advanced to third on the same play. A Travis Hayes double to right-center scored Simmons and Johnson, making it 4-0 Campbellsville.

OMWU brought in a new pitcher after the Hayes double but walked, the first batter he faced, Neilson. Bush moved Hayes to third and Neilson to second on a sacrifice fly. Potter delivered a two-RBI single into shallow right field to score Hayes and Neilson, CU 6-0.

Ryan Squires was the only Tiger to get a hit in the bottom of the third, a single to shallow centerfield. He was eventually scored on a Rams' wild throw, making it 7-0.

Campbellsville was able to put up two more insurance runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

The Tigers outhit the Rams 19-2 on the day, in two games played.

CU will return to action Friday, March 15 for its Mid-South Conference home opener; hosting No. .20 Georgetown College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m EDT. Game one will be 9-innings and game two will be 7-innings. Campbellsville will close out the series on Saturday, March 16 with a 9-inning game starting at noon. All games will be played at Houchens Insurance Group field, on campus of Campbellsville University.

NOTE: The doubleheader against Ohio Midwestern was later ruled as two uncountable contests by the NAIA Legislative Services due to Ohio Midwestern not being regionally accredited nor being a member of the NCCAA. The games were changed to exhibitions.
