DES MOINES, Iowa - Four Tigers fell in the second round of the championship bracket Thursday evening, while six advanced to the quarterfinal round at the 55
th annual NAIA Wrestling Championships. Campbellsville University managed to cling to a Top 6 standing to enter Day 2 and keep 11 of its 12 wrestlers alive in the tournament.
Campbellsville gained only six points in the evening session, sliding behind Oklahoma City (33) and Montana State-Northern (30). Grand View leapt to the front with 45 points, followed by Southern Oregon with 38.5 points and Great Falls (Mont.) with 36.5. The tournament will resume Friday morning at 10 a.m. CT.
Tim Thurston started the evening session of championship wrestling with an 9-4 decision over Brian Britney of Missouri Valley at 133 pounds. Tyler Alsip became the third Tiger to drop into the consolation bracket, falling 8-2 to Shorter's Nathan Galloway for the first time this season after beating the Mid-South Conference foe three times during the year.
At 141 pounds, Chris Teague downed Southern Oregon's Kyle Kirkuty to help CU gain ground on the second-place team, but the Tigers suffered an upset in the same weight as Great Falls' Myles Mazurkiewicz scored a 3-2 decision to beat Tommy Pretty for the first time in their three-year rivalry.
Pretty scored a takedown in the first period but was unable to score an escape point after choosing down in the second period. In the final minute of the period, Mazurkiewicz evened the score with two back points, while building riding time. Both wrestlers remained neutral in the third period for the Great Falls senior to pull off the upset using the riding time point.
CU dropped two of its next three matches, as Conor Young defeated Grand View's Chad Lowman, 6-3, but Nick Waldrop lost, 5-2, to Waldorf's Jeremy Padilla to split the 157-pound matches. At 165, Paul Gryniuk fell by a 13-2 major decision to Ethan Hinebauch of Montana State Northern.
The loses put the upper weights in a must-win situation to advance to the championship quarterfinals. At 184 pounds, Allen Scruggs moved into the quarters with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma City's Andrew Pontikes. Scruggs took a 1-0 lead with a second-period escape and then gained 1:23 of riding time in the third period. He gave up an escape point to and kept the match neutral for the win. The win places Scruggs in a quarterfinal match with last year's 184-pound champion, Evan Hinebauch of Montana State-Northern.
CU swept its 197-pound matches, becoming the Tigers' first weight to have both competitors in the quarterfinals. Jamelle Jones wasted no time in his NAIA national tournament debut, pinning John Lopez of Central Baptist in 1:24. Spencer Adams followed with a 7-4 decision over Embry-Riddle's Shawn Michalek.
The evening concluded with the first round of consolation, featuring those who lost in the morning session. In the 149-pound bracket, Matt Milton began his wrestle back attempt with a pin over James Peterson (Montana State Northern) in 3:20. Josh Ashbrook was eliminated in the 174-pound bracket after holding a 9-7 lead with less than a minute remaining. Jose Cruz of Embry-Riddle scored a takedown in the final seconds to even the score and pinned Ashbrook with nine seconds remaining in the match.
