Third-place CU advances five to NAIA wrestling semifinals

DES MOINES, Iowa - Campbellsville University wrestling tied its all-time best for most wrestlers in the NAIA semifinals as five Tigers advanced in the championship bracket Friday morning at the Jacobson Exhibition Center. With plenty of wrestling remaining, the Tigers have also already matched its program best five All-Americans, as all semifinal wrestlers are guaranteed All-American status.

Campbellsville will enter the evening session Friday at 6 p.m. CST as the third-place team in the tournament with nine of its 12 wrestlers still competing. The Tigers are only one spot out of second-place with 67 points, while Grand View University leads the tournament with 79 points and Southern Oregon is second with 68 points. .

"We had a great Friday morning session. We only lost one match of the six guys we had in the quarters and coming back on the back side, we had five pins. It was a great round," said CU head coach Franky James. "It's going to be hard to beat Grand View, but they just had a bad (consolation) round. If they have another bad round, it's still possible. Hopefully we'll have another round tonight like we did this morning."

Tim Thurston started the day at 133 pounds with an 11-0 major decision over Midland's Matt Katusin. Thurston will meet Grand View's Omi Acosta in the semifinal tonight at 6 p.m. CT. A win will send him to his first NAIA championship match, where he could meet either Nathan Galloway of Shorter University or Lindsey Wilson's Keith Klink.

On the mat across from Thurston, 141-pounder Chris Teague was going to work against Concordia's Jacob Williams. A win was pivitol, as a loss would have dropped Teague into a consolation bracket with teammate Tommy Pretty. Teague built a strong lead, but allowed Williams back into the match with stall points. He held on for a 13-12 victory. Teague will meet Anthony Weerheim (Montana State-Northern) in the semifinal.

Second-ranked Conor Young had no trouble at 157 pounds, as the Tiger junior strengthened his grip on CU's tech fall records with a 17-0 win over Mickey Chef of Montana State-Northern. The win helped shoot CU ahead of MSN, which had claimed fifth-place Thursday evening. It is Young's 10th tech fall of his career and sixth of the season - both CU records. He will meet top-ranked Nick Turner of Oklahoma City in the semifinal. Young defeated Turner, 9-6, in their only other career meeting at the 2009-10 national duals.

One of the biggest wins of the day belonged to Allen Scruggs, who used two sudden death overtime periods and two tiebreakers to knock off the reigning 184-pound NAIA champion, Evan Hinebauch. The two were tied 1-1 after regulation, 2-2 after the first overtime, and then 3-3. Scruggs claimed the upset with three seconds of riding time. He will face Southern Oregon's Derrick Rottenberg in the semifinals.

The 197 weight saw two last move takedowns - one in favor of the Tigers, one not. Jamelle Jones, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, was handed his first loss of the season when Grand View's Derek Nightser took him down with 20 seconds remaining to gain a 4-3 lead. Jones was unable to score an escape in the final seconds. One mat over, Spencer Adams rallied to keep a 197-pounder in the championship bracket. Adams took an early lead, but a takedown by Oklahoma City's Michael Eichenauer suddenly gave the Stars grappler a 5-4 lead. Adams gained a reversal as time expired to clinch his third All-American honor of his career. Adams will meet Midland's Joshua March in the semifinals.

Following the evening session Thursday, James told his wrestlers to take care of business in the consolation rounds. The Tigers jumped off to a strong start Friday morning, collecting second round consolation pins by Pretty (141), Matt Milton (149), Nick Waldrop (157) and Paul Gryniuk (165). Tyler Alsip advanced with an 8-1 decision at 133 pounds.

In the second consolation round of the day, Waldrop recorded another pin, while Alsip added a bonus point with an 11-1 major decision win. Pretty scored a 6-5 decision to advance to the All-American round of consolation.
