Shanae Netherland Thompson, a Campbellsville, Ky. native, becomes the first member of the Campbellsville University swimming program to be inducted into the Campbellsville University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Under the leadership of coaches Steve Bedingfiled and Dean Brownley, Thompson was a member of the inaugural women’s team for Campbellsville University in 1990, joining two other females.

During the last two years of her career, Thompson became the only female on the swim team but didn’t let that keep her from greatness. She competed in every individual event and held records for each one. Thompson specialized in the distance freestyle (500 yards and 1600 yards) and butterfly (100 yards and 200 yards) events. Thompson qualified for the NAIA National Swimming Championships in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and in 1993, was the very first CU swimmer to earn All American honors.

Thompson graduated from Campbellsville University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. She began her teaching career at North Hardin High School in Radcliff, Ky. in the fall of 1994, where she is still employed as a math teacher.

Thompson earned her Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Western Kentucky University in 1997. She completed her National Board Certification for Teaching in 2009 and renewed this teaching certificate in 2019.

Thompson worked with the swim teams for North Hardin and Central Hardin High schools from 1994-1999 as an assistant and head coach. During her tenure at North Hardin, Thompson has also served on various school committees and sponsored student clubs. Currently, Thompson is the senior class co-sponsor and mathematics department chairperson.

Thompson and her husband, Bobby Thompson II, an alumnus of CU, reside in Elizabethtown, Ky. with their daughters, Riley and Reese. Mr. Thompson is a special education teacher at the Early College and Career Center for Hardin County Schools and sports broadcaster for the local radio and television stations.
